Mumsnet campaign - child safety around dogs?

I'd reported a post to MNHQ because of all the useful links on child safety, agreeing that it would be useful as a sticky. Catherine replied explaining they couldn't because of such a huge number of requests for similar.

However, I think in a broader sense MN could do fantastic work on this issue given its demographic. In my dreams this would be a pairing with Victoria Stilwell but someone less famous would absolutely do - Daniel Mills perhaps? A bit of a campaign, some genuinely lifesaving advice well delivered, which could improve the safety of children and the welfare of dogs in one fell swoop.

Whaddya think? :)

You see - it's such simple stuff but it needs to be put out there so people are aware of it. In the same way as we teach children to know how to cross roads safely, we should be teaching them to handle encounters with dogs safely.

The biggest thing I have been having issues with is stopping the DC cuddling the dog.

They love her to pieces and it's natural to want to have a cuddle, nothing wrong with that per say but it must be on the dogs say so not just because they want one.

I also watch for the pleading look I can get from the dog when they are having a play together or just general noise in one room and will take her out of the room with me.

I'd happily spend lots of time learning and being told good advice to help us all work well together.

Do you think it's easy to find reliable advice on how to manage those situations, InTheRedCorner? Or resources to help you teach your children appropriate behaviour?

It has been easy because I have put the effort in. Before that I wouldn't have thought anything of dog on leads around my children and dogs off leads would piss me off because I didn't think to know what we should be doing

I'm in a new world tbh.

I would live my DC to be taught outside of the home about dog respect, it would be a one assembly lesson.

We do puppy leasons every week as well.

I very much agree that this is something schools could cover easily. But it's also vital to educate parents and target younger children.

The majority of dog bites are inflicted by familiar dogs.
