Letting the dog sleep on my bed as a one off, bad idea?

Normally the dog is not allowed on the beds or sofas. However, over the last week there has been a lot of disruption. Our dog has had good daily walks and is being fed, cuddled and played with as normal. But naturally he has picked up on the disruption and is out of sorts and in extra need of reassurance and affection.

I've just been up and found him fast asleep on my bed and am tempted to let him stay. But am I giving mixed messages and will this be unfair in the long run by confusing him. I'm not head of the pack by any means, the head is not here and is very consistent with discipline.

So am I being cruel or kind? I just hate seeing him out of sorts.

Don't let him.

Make him a cosy corner somewhere.

We had our dog spayed on Friday, she usually sleeps in a crate. She howled on Friday night so DH slept on the sofa. I went to bed on Saturday night, and woke up on Sunday morning with DH and the dog. I think we are screwed now, and she'll never sleep in her crate again. (She can't turn around with the cone of shame in there)

No adivce, except maybe don't start!!

MilkyBarButtons · 18/11/2013 20:54

I think you're right. I woke him up and told him gently to get off the bed which he did so I gave him a biscuit and have come down with him for a play and a cuddle. I just love him to pieces and he gets me every time with those big black eyes!

Normally I can resist as I know he would have me playing 24/7 but I hate it when he is out of sorts due to disruption as he does not understand and you can't explain to him why. Just got to give him lots of cuddles and remind myself this is a rare occurrence and we will be back to normal soon.

Why can't you have a dog sleep in your bed? My staff sleeps on the end of my bed every night, she's loyal and loving .

MilkyBarButtons · 18/11/2013 21:00

Sorry, I've been a bit maudlin about him as he is the same breed of dog I had when I was a child and the Vet said he was getting on a bit at his last check up Sad. My old dog used to sit by the back door and when he got old it used to take him a long time to get up so we could come in. I still look through the window before opening to make sure he is not there 15 years on and get a lump in my throat each time.

They really aren't pets but members of the family.

My little dog sleeps in my bed behind my legs every nightBlush
The big dog isn't allowed upstairs. Blatant favoritismGrin

We take dd's dog with us in the Horsebox and camping and he sleeps in the bed with us, at home he sleeps in the laundry room with the other dogs, seems to work ok. I think I know which he prefers though Grin

Lonecatwithkitten · 18/11/2013 22:48

Dog on bed here if he likes it, tonight he by DD's bed and position he has taken up every night she is here since my old cat who watched over her each night died.
The other night there was barely room for me what with two cats and the dog on the bed, nice and cosy thoughWink.

We bought a Superking sized bed just to have the extra room for a Labradoodle and a Staff to snuggle!

I'm a soft touch and I don't care. I allow them on the sofas too.

It's whatever works for you.

DramaAlpaca · 18/11/2013 23:07

Our youngest dog absolutely adores DS1. He's away at university now, and when he comes home she's always delighted to see him & wants to be with him all the time. She's taken to following him upstairs & sleeping in his room. When he's not around she's perfectly happy to sleep downstairs with the other dogs.

Last weekend he was home & when he was going to bed he expected the dog to follow him up as usual & was surprised when she didn't. That was because she'd gone upstairs before him & was already comfortably ensconced on his bed!

Yes, he's a soft touch & so am I.

worley · 18/11/2013 23:23

I let ds's dog stay with him for a one off when exdp left 4 years ago... The bloody dog is still there with DS every night. He may sometimes stay with me in the evening till 10 while I'm pottering.. But 10pm and he takes himself off to the end of ds1's bed. God knows what the dog will do when DS goes to uni in two years time as he knows he's not allowed in my room! As much as he stands in the door way and gives me puppy eyes lol

Morloth · 19/11/2013 07:16

I dunno.

My old dog was not supposed to sit on the lounge, but she knew I was more relaxed about this than DH.

I used to always know when DH was coming up the road after work because she would move from her spot on the lounge, to her 'official' spot. Grin

So you know, they can understand different people mean different rules.

Our cat sleeps wherever the hell she likes, usually behind my knees.

nurseneedshelp · 19/11/2013 07:25

I'm currently sat on the sofa with a humongous dalmatian and a grumpy shitzu! Although they aren't allowed upstairs because they chase the cat and that's where he mainly lies all bloody day!

My lovely old staffie used to sleep at the bottom of my bed every night though.

Each to their own I suppose!

Tillypo · 19/11/2013 11:26

My 3 have got full run of the house they sleep on the sofa or chairs through the day and sleep in bed at night. Our little JR has even got his own pillow which he puts his head on and sleeps under the duvet. If you don't want that then you are going ti have to stop before you start.

Huskylover1969 · 19/11/2013 18:10

My Goldie and husky go on all the beds and furniture and we are so soft
We have left them downstairs but they create
Every time I go upstairs they think it's bed time
They start off on the bed then Goldie lies by my side on the floor and the husky lies on the landing xx

littlewhitebag · 19/11/2013 20:45

The only bed my dog goes on is DD1's and she is the one away at uni. When she is home the dog is so glad to see her and they like to snuggle up together on her bed. I would love to have her on my bed on nights like tonight when DH is away but i am worried she would give the game away when he was home!

Amandine29 · 19/11/2013 20:51

My dogs sleep on the bed and I don't care. There's no reason why they have to sleep downstairs if you don't want them to but if you do under no circumstances should you let them spend one night in your bed. My aunt tried this with her dog. She let him lay on the sofa after an operation as a one off and now he's on there all the time. Not that she's bothered anymore but there's no way she could keep him off there now.

LittleMissRed · 19/11/2013 20:52

Our dog is allowed on the furniture and sleeps on/in our bed. We know she probably shouldn't but we are too tired to do anything about it (and we quite like it really)

Ilovegeorgeclooney · 19/11/2013 20:59

Let my puppy sleep on my bed when the firework season started.......still there. Loads of dogs in the past but never once did I let them even go upstairs but now I am home alone( DD2 went to uni in Oct).....Soo gorgeous though.

LEMisafucker · 19/11/2013 21:03

Our dogs sleep on our bed, ddog1 used to sleep on the floor in the bedroom, then we got ddog2 who is a rescue and we said "just for tonigt" .............um :) now they BOTH sleep on the bed, i quite like it, but DP gets a bit grumpy - he can always sleep on the sofa i guess Grin.

LittleMissRed · 20/11/2013 15:54

Smile LEM - we were talking about getting a second dog, but DH said "there would be no room on the bed for another" so I suggested the sofa to him
