Kennel cough

Just phoned the vet who told me that the symptoms exhibited by the cairn terrier we are currently dogsitting 'are probably caused by kennel cough'. I am taking him in tomorrow for anti-biotics. He has been vaccinated so I'm surprised.

We also have a 9 year-old lab x springer (not vaccinated) who I assume will also get it.

I've googled and read various conflicting reports about its severity, virulence etc.

Anyone have any experience? Advice? Do I need to keep them away from other dogs/children?!

Thanks

Keep them away from other dogs and give them some Tixylix . The thing with KC is ,like human flu ,there are many strains and the vaccine just vaccinates against the main ones . My dog has had KC twice in the past and although he has been vaccinated for the last 3 yrs he got a mild bout of KC a couple of weeks ago .

Kennel cough vaccination covers one of the viruses and one of the bacteria involved, but there are other viruses too. It is advertised as reducing the severity of the disease rather than preventing it.

Seen vet, not kennel cough! Just a viral respiratory infection - not likely to be serious. Vet recommended Tixylix or Benylin! Thanks for the replies Smile
