I have never had a dog before and it is it great excitement that I am collecting a new puppy at the weekend. I have a really silly question, please don't laugh, but apart from sleep, eat, play and go in the garden, what does a nine week old puppy do?
Also I like to do a workout dvd will I be able to o this without him going crazy?
Thanks

What breed is the pup?

whatwoulddexterdo · 12/11/2013 18:26

He is a golden retriever

All pups chew things, most bark and whine/cry when left alone as have been with their litter siblings.
If you lie on the floor pups and dogs like to lie on top of you/play.
Depends on what you will be doing on the Video and the temperament of the pupSmile

Madondogs · 12/11/2013 20:18

VeryEnvy, of your puppy. I've had Goldie's for 30 yrs and IMHO they are the best dogs in the world!
He probably will be a bit excited if you do your exercise in the same room, so I would remove him for that.feel free to PM me if you want... I'm no expert but happy to help.
Enjoy those furry cwtches and that lovely puppy breath!

digerd · 12/11/2013 20:24

Goldens are lovely, but as with all pups if you start jigging, jumping, waving arms about, they usually get excited and think it is play-time .Some may at first feel scared. Best you crate him with a kong stuffed with titbits during your fitness routines. He may even bark with alarm if you look frightening enough to him or try to bite your toes or heels .
Good luck.

digerd · 12/11/2013 20:26

ps
If you are doing floor exercises, they love to join you and jump onto you

whatwoulddexterdo · 12/11/2013 20:34

Thanks for your replies, will probably crate him while I exercise, I certainly don't want to frighten him.
I can't wait to get him but am really nervous! We have thought long and hard about getting a dog and have not rushed into it on a whim.
I am a sahm should I leave the pup in his crate while I do the school run which takes 30 mind or should I pit him in the car and carry him to the gate?
Also any tips on settling him at night would be welcome.

On the bright side, once he's old enough all that walking will mean less work out DVD time required Grin

HoneyDragon · 12/11/2013 20:39

Carrying him is great for socialisation.

However crating him is good for getting him used to being alone sometimes as long as he's left feeling safe and secure.

digerd · 13/11/2013 17:04

If you are collecting him at the weekend and you do the school run on Monday morning, he would be safer in the crate at home for the 30 minutes. Or you can take him in a travel box locked in.

He may cry, whine or just sleep at home or in the car.
It really is best to get him used to being in the crate at home for the short school run.
When you get home if he is awake, and every time he awakes from a sleep, you must take him outside to do a wee immediately.

whatwoulddexterdo · 13/11/2013 17:26

Yes will crate him whilst I do the school run. It will be too scarey y for him whilst he is so young.
Can't understand why I am so nervous about getting him.

I do, that is why at my ripe old age, I decided I was not up for a puppy and managed to find a 2.5 year-old small quiet breed Smile.
You will be feeding 4 times a day = 4 poos after meals plus one every morning and weeing countless times. Watching them all the time like a toddler, making sure they don't chew what you don't want them to chew.

Do let us know how you get on.

There is a new puppy mum's Thread which would be of great help and support to you.

Booboostoo · 13/11/2013 17:41

You cannot get a puppy at the weekend and crate him for 30 minutes on Monday! That's how you put a puppy off the crate.

The puppy must come to see the crate as a safe place to retreat to, and this takes time to train. For the first few weeks you need to leave the crate door open and allow the puppy to explore the crate. Make the crate inviting and try to feed him in there. As he gets more used to the crate you can start closing the door but make sure you stay in the room with him so that he does not associate being shut in the crate with being left alone.

Ideally you want to either be with the puppy or take him with for the first few weeks.

Puppies should also be doing training and socialisation. Until about 14-16 weeks socialisation is THE most important thing you can do with your puppy. The more people, animals and objects he sees during that period the fewer problems he will have later on. While he is yet to finish his vaccinations you have to be careful, e.g. avoid unvaccinated dogs and fox poo, but you can also carry him around to see the world in safety.

It is never too early to start training and ideally you want to find a training class you can join. Look for a trainer that uses positive reward methods and attend a class before you join to make sure you are happy with the advice that's given. A lot of places now also do puppy parties for unvaccinated puppies to socialise with other puppies - great fun!

whatwoulddexterdo · 13/11/2013 18:31

Digerd, where did you get your dog from and what breed is it? If you don't mind me asking. Ideally that's the age I would like. I have been home checked for a rescue centre and passed!

We just picked up our golden pup today so really enjoying the advice in this thread, thank you!

We're learning very quickly here! Grin

whatwoulddexterdo · 14/11/2013 17:07

Oh peppa how exciting, let, me know how you get on.
What did you call him?

OP posts:
digerd · 14/11/2013 17:42

OP
She is a Lhasa Apso, similar to a Shitzu and you rarely find them in a rescue centre. It was a KC registered breeder I contacted who lived near me.
I had this breed before and knew how quiet and well behaved they are.

They are small lap dogs really.

You will all love your Golden Retriever puppy and he will be more suitable for children.

whatwoulddexterdo · 14/11/2013 19:42

Digerd, she sounds lovely.

PeppaTwig · 14/11/2013 21:40

Ours is called Freddie! He's had a lovely day so far... Who knows what his first night will bring!!

coffeeinbed · 14/11/2013 21:44

OP, Booboo speaks a lot of sense.
Please don't ignore her post.

digerd · 16/11/2013 08:12

OP
Thinking of you picking up pup today. Hope you slept last night.
Peppa
How did the 2 nights with new pup go so far?

kitsmummy · 16/11/2013 08:43

I was also going to say take the puppy on the school run, carry Him and don't let him be swarmed by kids, that will be great socialisation for him and the best thing you can do

digerd · 16/11/2013 10:28

Pups must be constrained while in a car, usually locked in a travel box. The driver of the car cannot hold pup in the arms and is unwise to have him on driver's lap. DC if old enough could hold him before being dropped off at school, but then there is nobody to hold him on the drive back.
A pup should not be in a car jumping around trying to get on driver's lap or crying because he can't. Too much distraction for the driver.

Booboostoo · 16/11/2013 10:57

digerd I (almost) completely agree with you, but who suggested otherwise? The puppy should be in a carrier box secured by a seat belt, or secured by a dog harness seat belt, or in the boot with a dog guard, or in the boot in a crate. The DC should not be holding the dog because in case of an accident they would not be able to keep hold of him and he would fly through the car injuring himself and other passengers.

digerd · 17/11/2013 08:02

I mentioned the travel box in the car as nobody else had and OP is a novice and was asking for help. The DC holding the pup on the way there but not on the way back was incase she was considering that and would not work. I was not suggesting it be done but that it would be dangerous.

Thinking of OP and wondering how the first night wentSmile.
