New thread, because quite frankly I can't do without you all :)

OP posts:

I'm silly excited that we have our first puppy training session tomorrow, taking all of the family and the volunteer on the phone has a fully grown Rottie and said she was really looking forward to meeting Roxie Smile

I had surgery yesterday so not feeling great but managed a good 40 minute walk, met a few dogs and a group of school children and all went well.

We are crating over night with no problems but she has weed on the lounge carpet a couple of times, am I missing signs or is it just a phase? I can't believe we have only had her 7 days. Did have a massive wobble during the week and regretted everything but I think that is because I'm nervous in regards to Roxie and the cat. So far Roxie has downstairs and the cat upstairs with doors closed to take her outside.

Massive post, sorry! Lots of questions and uncertainty!

sweetkitty · 22/11/2013 16:07

Hi all trying to catch up with you all.

Nalas 19 weeks now, growing every day it seems. She's stopped the nipping but we are still working on the jumping, she's terrible around food DP has to go outside or her crate if we are eating. She's a lazy girl who just loves curling up and sleeping on you indoors but loves to get out for a run. She's quite a pain until she gets her morning run.

kissmyheathenass · 22/11/2013 17:18

Hi - hope to be joining you all shortly Smile. Can I ask 2 things:

  1. What are the essentials I need to buy before collecting the puppy? Can you recommend a carrier for the car and can puppy sleep in it for first weeks?
  1. How do you stop puppies eating lego etc? DO you keep them out of certain rooms or are you very tidy?

TIA

JammyDodger1 · 22/11/2013 18:17

Hi Red how old is your cat?
Jammycat is 3, and we introduced them straight away, he is not the most tolerant of cats at the best of times so we were a little nervous, but I think he knows the puppy is only a baby, so when he swipes at her, when she is jumping up at him, he doesn't have his claws out, after 5 weeks they are ok in the same room and have been nose to nose a few times, don't get me wrong they are not best friends but we are getting there, personally I think providing you don't leave them alone together introducing them sooner is better than leaving it any longer but you know your cat and puppy, good luck Smile

happygolucky0 · 22/11/2013 18:24

Re the toilet training you have just got to take them outside lots and watch them when they are in the house. Hoping that they pick up the idea that the place to go is the garden.
I use a fabric crate for the car. Think they are 30 or40 in pets at home. The Lego I wouldn't leave anything around that pup could choke on . You can teach leave and off to help.
I gAve a worming tablet today but she has been sick. Would you give another tomorrow?

JammyDodger1 · 22/11/2013 18:25

Hi Kiss congrats on getting your new addition to the family Smile

I didn't get a carrier for the car so can't advice on what is best, I just bought a car lead like this have used it for the first time today and it was fine.

Apart from the usual which I am sure you know, lead, bowls, toys etc, I also got a an extendable lead, I use puppy pads as am out for a few hours at work during the day, some people like them, some not, it works for me, and she only uses one of them now which is right by the back door so signs are good for her wanting to go out.

When we picked her up, we took a blanket and rubbed it on her brothers and sisters, and that really helped on the first few nights to settle her and she still sleeps with it.

Will have a think and see if I can think of anything else, but there is a font of knowledge on here much more experienced than me Smile

digerd · 22/11/2013 20:06

happy
Did she bring up the tablet or was it just bile she brought up?

InTheRedCorner · 22/11/2013 21:02

Hi jammy our cat must be around 3 as well. Not sure because she was also from rescue.

They met this evening! Cat hissing but Roxy just watching, luckily it was in the hall/kitchen so near to a door. We let them have a good look at each other and let the cat out. When she came back in Roxy was in her crate and the cat sailed past her! phew that will be great if they could just agree to disagree.

Evrything is great at the minute really happy.

InTheRedCorner · 22/11/2013 21:11

I've tried to upload a picture to my profile but it is only loading upside down Hmm could someone take a look and see if it's worked please?

sweetkitty · 22/11/2013 21:41

Nala and the cat have a strained relationship, she wants to play with him and barks and chases him, he ignores or hisses at her, he has swiped her a few times too. It's the barking that's the annoying thing though. And she beat me to the cat litter tray today (vom emoticon). Oh and she quite likes a hairball sick too.

InTheRedCorner · 22/11/2013 22:23

As I type Roxie and the cat are having their 3rd meeting of the evening and the cat has won all three meets Grin

Roxie the Rottweiler is not as scary as she looks!!

Phew.

happygolucky0 · 23/11/2013 08:34

Digerd thanks for reply. I crushed the tablet as she wouldn't swollen it whole. There was alot of sick and it wasn't bile.

happygolucky0 · 23/11/2013 08:38

Intheredcorner
The picture showing upside down. Very cute !!

digerd · 23/11/2013 12:59

Did you mix it in with her food and soon after she was sick?
Has she done it before with the same tablet?

For small breed pups I keep with the suspension/liquid until 6 months.
Sorry, have forgotten how old your little girl is now?
But I give mine granules mixed in her usual bit of wet food , she is 3years-old now.

digerd · 23/11/2013 13:01

My post was for happy

happygolucky0 · 23/11/2013 20:20

Digerd I never knew that it come in liquid form. I gave to her around 9.30am she eat at midday then was sick around 3pm. I think maybe she got hold of some cat poo which was the cause of the sick, Possibly. She is just 6 months I gave her half a tablet. Maybe I should leave it a few weeks then give her the other half. She is 1 kg off being able to have a whole tablet so I guess it wouldn't do a great deal of harm if she did manage to get anything from the tablet before she was sick.

digerd · 23/11/2013 20:53

happy
As she had the deworming at 9.30 and was sick at 3pm she should have digested it long before she was sick. It may have irritated her stomach lining and hence was sick after her food at midday.
The crushed tablet should be given with a little bit of wet food.
If she is only 1k under the full tablet I'd have given her the full one unless she weighs only 2 k.

InTheRedCorner · 23/11/2013 22:00

Another great day here. Roxie had her first puppy training session, we all went and met loads of other lovely puppies and their owners and Roxie was very social although rubbish at most things asked of her

The only thing I am struggling with is getting used to dog farts in the lounge, she bloody stinks!! Grin

digerd · 24/11/2013 12:38

What comes out at that end depends on what went in the other endGrin
Perhaps change the food?

happygolucky0 · 24/11/2013 15:26

Digerd thank you. Yes you maybe right that the tablet could oif caused the sickness. As I googled it and seems lots of posts about dogs being sick after their tablet.
Good to know that she would of digested it.

JammyDodger1 · 24/11/2013 16:45

I also use the liquid for worming Belle as its really easy to use, I use Drontal for puppies as had problems the cat getting tablets down him so went for the easy option with her.

Belle seems to have gone off eating her food, routine was going well, breakfast at 7/7.30, dh goes to work at about 10ish, I get back at 1.30, put her lunch down then and then tea about 6.30/7pm depending when she has slept as we walk to school at 3.30 so that can tire her out, she has been eating her food with gusto but over the last few days not really interested, will have a few mouthfuls then leaves it, goes back a few times at each meal time, she is eating it all eventually but seems to have lost all enthusiasm.

A friend thinks she is showing signs that she wants to be fed only twice a day but she not quite 14 weeks surely that too soon?

Or is she bored of her food? Should I try a different sort do you think?

She has Royal Canine now and the odd treat when we are training.

picnicinthewoods · 25/11/2013 10:03

What age do you swap to just two meals then? (GR 22 weeks) Is it around 24 weeks?

SallyBear · 25/11/2013 17:32

I think that it is 6 months, but I suppose its up to you for when you feel is the right time. Toby (lab) still seems to have long legs that need growing into so unless I can't be home for lunch then I'll carry on with 3 meals until I think his growth has slowed down.

picnicinthewoods · 25/11/2013 20:41

Ok thanks SallyBear. Legend (GR 22 weeks) seems to still need 3 meals atm I think, he eats it all and is quite lean looking. I will play it by ear:)

I'm feeling a bit better about things this week. we have a plan of action for his behavioural problems & I think I'm noticing some tiny weeny improvements. He took a treat off the decorator we had in today, its the 3rd time he's met him and the first time he didn't bark or growl at him:) He is also slowly getting to know my extended family......he literally bounded over to mum today......just like a proper puppy! Happy moment.
There's still work to do, lots of it, but I'm very hopeful.
Hope everyone's doing ok:)

mintchocchick · 25/11/2013 22:20

That sounds loads better picnic. You must be starting to feel weight lift from your shoulders. Even if you have a long way to go still, just to start feeling you're moving in the right direction is massive.

I can't remember if you said how legends problems arose? Was he nervous to begin with? Sounds like progress though if he's taking treats from someone, at least that gives you something to work with.

When you're stressed with the hard bits, remind yourself of him bounding up to your mum! I do that with minty - when he's leaping and nipping at DH or DS2 just as I'm draining boiling water from the pasta and DS1 is yelling for his German book that he can't find or some such chaos is ensuing, I try and remember my lovely calm cuddle/tummy rub with minty after our off-lead walk. If I don't I get a real knee jerk reaction of "it's all going wrong, I can't cope" which I'm sure minty picks up on.
