New thread, because quite frankly I can't do without you all :)

Needa I'm with yr dh as I've just read clicker book and am v confused! I need to find a stick.

NCISaddict · 22/01/2014 16:20

I'm not sure growling is a problem necessarily, my pup and my sisters dog sound like they're killing each other when they play. I'm generally a great believer in well-socialised and friendly dogs sorting things out for themselves but you can get problems when one dog hasn't been sociailised and doesn't 'speak dog', is fear agressive or in your case when they're both pups who don't know each other and haven't yet learnt the rules of doggie etiquette then you have to intervene. When I owned two pups from the same litter (not something I would ever do again) they played noisily and constantly but they knew each other very well as they'd always been together so were fine.

I would be more concerned about the trying and failing to get away though, that sounds like the play was a bit out of control.

reup · 22/01/2014 17:30

My instinct was that mine wasnt having as much fun as the other one. He is just getting braver with dogs at puppy class (weirdly we have seen no dogs in parks this week) so I dont want to scupper that.

Thanks for all replies. Tried some clicker training and its becoming clearer. He mainly wanted to get the clicker though.

Reup - I think it might be best to avoid that puppy play for a while. I used to have my puppy play with a smaller puppy - they were absolute hooligans tearing around after each other and we felt it was ok as they both went back for more, but our dog trainer said it sounded like bullying behaviour not playing! So we were sort of inadvertently teaching them to bully each other. She recommended that puppies only really play with older dogs to learn manners and puppy with puppy play was kept as short and on-lead as possible.

Moose - poor you! Awful to be ill when you were so looking forward to gaining your space at home again. Hope it's a 24 hr thing.

NCISaddict · 22/01/2014 19:41

Our pups aren't allowed to play at class unless they're really calm so that never happens.Smileotherwise they say it just turns into a free for all. They can join the social walks they run when they're six months old where they can play as they're a bit more controllable and there's different ages of dogs.

Interesting about puppy play Nalas best doggy friend is a Doberman the same age, they love each other the way they run towards each other is great, their play is rough but never aggressive.

We also know another two dog family dog 1 is older and hates anything jumping at his head, he quickly put Nala in her place and she knows no jumping and goes and greets him but knows he doesn't play dog 2 is a younger whippet and she loves him and follows him everywhere he will play but on his terms she's very submissive to him as well.

We also had a humping Lhasa Apso yesterday as well which was actually quite funny as he struggled to catch up with Nala then tried to hump her legs.

Millie's Wolfheart going down a treat, she used to leave the Burns until she was really hungry Millie's gets wolfed in seconds.

moosemama · 23/01/2014 17:38

Thanks for the well-wishes. It seems I was lucky and it was just a 24/48 hour bug, rather than the horrible Norovirus that's going around my younger dcs' school at the moment.

This afternoon I left Pip loose in the kitchen while I did a school run for the first time ever. I gave him a treat ball with his meal in, a large kong (plus a small kong for Lurcherboy) and a couple of busy buddies. Main reason for the extra treat toys was that Lurcherboy was so delighted to see his old treat ball and ran straight to it, so I was worried they may fight. I needn't have worried.

They scoffed their way through the lot, taking almost exactly an hour, which is longer than the green-feeder and kong combo he used to get in his crate. He then whinged a bit once he'd finished stuffing his face and I recognised it as his 'I need to go out Mum ' whinge, which would only get louder if I didn't respond, so let him out and he came back in and spent another ten minutes finishing off the last bits of kong. All in all I think it was a big success. Would have been better if the toys had lasted longer than an hour, but not bad at all. If I can just get him to the point that he stops eating and goes to sleep with a nice full tum I will finally be getting somewhere - and may even be able to go somewhere! Grin

I'm seriously thinking about buying one of the remote control cameras someone linked to on another thread. You can control it via your laptop or smartphone and it has two way audio, so you can speak to the dogs and give them the 'quiet' or 'settle' cue if they're making a noise. I reckon it's worth a try for a little over £30.00 and even if it doesn't help with the training, it will indulge my nosy side, that wants to know what they actually get up to while I'm out - rather than what it sounds like on a dictaphone recording. Glad your a bit better moose

Now to put drama of the day - was at the hospital with DD1 this morning to get her finger checked, it was fine. Rushed home to take Nala out before the school run. Noticed she was a bit lame in her hind leg when we got home Hmm found a lovely cut on one of her pads Hmm about a cm in length v shaped. Twice in less than two weeks! Booked into the vets for 4.10 tomorrow first appt so have to take the 4 DCs with me HmmHmm

Could have cried we are just getting over the last cut.

moosemama · 23/01/2014 19:22

Oh no sweetkitty - poor Nala.

Do you think she's done it in the same place/way as the other cut? Hope it's nothing serious and they just clean it up and leave it to heal.

Sighthounds have extremely thin skin and are always injuring their feet/legs. Lots of owners keep a bottle of hibiscrub (like the stuff they use in hospitals - you can buy it at online vet stores like Viovet or Vet UK) at home and unless they're deep or serious, just give them a really good clean with that and dress if appropriate. A good dog first-aid kit is worth it's weight in gold, as with the right bits and bobs you can save yourself a fortune in vets bills.

sweetkitty · 23/01/2014 20:42

No last cut was deep across her dew claw front leg, this one is a pad cut hind leg.

RRs have extra cushioned paws to allow them to run for miles on end, not cushioned enough though. Glass is everywhere around here Hmm

moosemama · 23/01/2014 21:13

Do you think she'd tolerate some boots, like the ones used by dogs that go trekking across tough terrain. There are different styles available these days due to thinks like canicross.

sweetkitty · 23/01/2014 22:35

I was actually looking at these today Grin might be an idea

PickledMoomin · 24/01/2014 07:30

Can I join? Picked up 8 week old pup yesterday. Put her in her crate overnight. She made lots of intermittent noise. So far, she's going to toilet on a puppy pad and doing well. I plan to introduce her to the garden today and tomorrow.

moosemama · 24/01/2014 10:16

Welcome PickledMoomin Smile

What sort of puppy? We do love a good puppy photo to coo over. Wink

PickledMoomin · 24/01/2014 13:38

She's a Cavachon. I'll add a photo or two now.

Have Gwen Bailey's book at my side. Took her into the garden for the first time earlier. It's wet and cold. She wasn't keen! She shivered for ages afterwards.

First jab and puppy check at 530.

PickledMoomin · 24/01/2014 14:44

moosemama · 24/01/2014 15:33

Can't see your profile, you need to make your profile public, then select the photo and say you want that viewable by any MNetter.

I've heard that Cavachon's make excellent family pets, as they tend to be so sweet natured. Smile

PickledMoomin · 24/01/2014 16:43

Can you see her now?

NCISaddict · 24/01/2014 16:45
