New thread, because quite frankly I can't do without you all :)

OP posts:
basildonbond · 16/12/2013 09:31

He's very subdued this morning, really not like himself at all :(

He's 5 months old today - as he can't go out for a walk is he old enough to have a marrowbone? And if so, do I go to a butcher and ask for one? (Clueless vegetarian here - I've not been anywhere near a butcher's shop for 30+ years)

moosemama · 16/12/2013 12:25

Poor Fitz. Has he been to the vets yet? How did it go?

If he hasn't had bones before a big juicy marrowbone is likely to cause an upset stomach.

Frustrating walk for us this morning. Thought we'd have the place to ourselves with the weather being so grotty, but the park was heaving and I don't feel up to walking the fields today. I tend not to let mine off in the local park after several incidents with out of control dogs. They did get 20 minutes free running, but then I decided to take them out of the park and do some leadwork with them as Pip was getting a bit stressed at having dogs coming at him from every conceivable angle. Still, it seems to have done the trick for now, they're both fast asleep, tummies skyward and snoring like little piggies. Will try again later and see if we can give them some more off-lead fun - although I'm seriously not liking the look of the current downpour and think I may struggle to persuade ds1 he has to come out in it with us.

basildonbond · 16/12/2013 14:24

He's injured one of his toes - the vet's not sure if it's broken or just soft tissue damage but didn't want to do an X-ray as the treatment's the same. His toe's very swollen and he's not putting any weight on that foot. He's had an anti-inflammatory injection and has painkillers for 5 days and rest (eek) for a week. It's not been a problem today as he's been v quiet and has mainly just wanted to rest anyway but any tips on how to manage rest when he perks up?

Coincidentally (?) he had really sloppy poo this morning for the first time since the week we brought him home so I don't want to give him anything which might make him have an upset tummy so I'll scrap the idea of a marrowbone for now

Hope you have a more productive walk this afternoon moose

Oh, and thanks juice - the moleskine codes worked when I swapped them round :)

needastrongone · 16/12/2013 16:04

Basildon, that's exactly what our vet said last month, honestly, he was fine within 48 hours. Next time, if it's foot/paw related, I am definitely going to leave an extra day or two before visiting, if the treatment plan is the same and they can do little anyway, I might as well have £100 in my pocket.

moose, not a good day for dog walking then? I am lucky in that the DC are old enough to both do the dog walking themselves and/or be left anyway.

Doubly lucky in that we are rural, 5 minutes in any direction of our house leads to whatever I fancy really, can't change the weather though I am afraid Smile

barbarianoftheuniverse · 16/12/2013 17:12

Poor Fitz,
Gave Meg a marrowbone about a month ago- she gnawed away all afternoon and had the trots for the next 24hours. I should have rationed it and taken in away after an hour I was told.

Took Meg over night visiting at the weekend. She was much, much too bouncy. How do puppies ever learn not to jump up? She was her worst yet- launching from standing start into old ladies' laps... Terrible.

moosemama · 16/12/2013 18:14

Ah, poor Fitz. Sloppy poo is probably down to the stress of being in pain, poor boy. Sad Hope he's feeling better soon. If he perks up while you still need to keep him quiet, perhaps some clicker training? Shaping something like sneezing or nodding his head? Something where he can sit still and just use his brain?

Well this afternoon's walk was a bust as well. Ds1 seems to be coming down with something. He went very green and said he needed to lie down - pretty much unheard of for him - then actually fell asleep on the sofa! Shock Had to wake him to go and fetch ds2 and dd, he leaned on me the whole time we were at the school, came home and lay straight down again. Not a good start to his holidays.

Will get dh to take the dogs out again for another lead-walk now it's dark, but actually both dogs have been snoozing away quite happily, so maybe all that heelwork wore them out after all.

Barbarian, she was probably just over-stimulated. Could you try a canvas travel crate and lots of chews and kongs next time?

SallyBear · 16/12/2013 18:39

Poor Fitz! Sending healing thoughts your way BB. Hmm

GhostsInSnow · 16/12/2013 19:25

Poor Fitz Sad hope he's feeling better soon.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 16/12/2013 20:08

She probably was, Moose. We did take a crate and kongs and chews but there was a lot of 'how cruel let her out' etc. (Heartlly seconded by Meg).

Hope your DS is better very soon. I always used to worry when they took to the sofas.

moosemama · 16/12/2013 21:00

Thanks barbarian. He has ASD and doesn't usually know he's ill, so it is a bit worrying. He's a very funny colour this evening.

I hate it when people tell me I'm being cruel when I'm just doing what the dogs need. We had to leave them in the car the other week when we arrived at the ILs house to find it rammed with visitors. It wouldn't have been fair on either them or the visitors to let them come in, they'd had a good long walk and were settled enough. My IL's have an upside-down house, so we could see straight into the boot of the car from the kitchen window and knew they were just sleeping anyway. We still got lots of 'how could you be so mean - let them come in' and 'poor doggies stuck out there in the car' etc. Hmm

moosemama · 17/12/2013 11:42

Pip has just experienced his first ever bath. You would not believe what he looked like when we came back from our morning walk today - mud monster doesn't even begin to describe it. Grin

Lurcherboy obviously decided today was the day to put the young upstart in his place and Pip got rolled - a lot! Didn't seem to bother him though and he definitely didn't get the message as he kept trying to get Lurcherboy to chase him again. Confused

He was really good in the bath (I gave in and washed him indoors, as I was too soft to leave him outside on his own while I set up the hosepipe etc). I stood him on two bathtowels and he just stood there quietly, looking rather dejected.

Unfortunately, during his bath I discovered two cuts on his legs and a graze/bruise on his eyelid. Think I'm going to have to start reigning in their loopy Lurcher shenanigans until I've managed to instill some manners into him, before we end up with a vet bill for putting him back together. Hmm

NCISaddict · 17/12/2013 12:30

Finn gets bathed regularly as he manages to roll in fox poo at least every other day, I think he's found a secret stash under the hedges in our garden. Grin
If anyone was to see him during a bath I think they would call the RSPCA, he looks skinny, miserable and as if he's beaten on a regular basis. Dejected just doesn't begin to describe it. I don't think he quite gets cause and effect.

moosemama · 17/12/2013 12:40
Grin

Ds1 said Pip looked like a giant drowned rat when I was bathing him. On the other hand, he now looks like a fluffy pom-pom, with a bit of a demi-wave ... on stilts! Grin

I put a new picture on my profile last night. Ds2 fell asleep on the floor with Pip - who was using him as a pillow - and ds1 was stroking Pip's tummy with his foot. My Mum took the picture as she thought it was so sweet to see them all interacting so nicely. It just looked daft from where I was sitting! Grin

sweetkitty · 17/12/2013 16:08

Hi all well Nala is 5 months old tomorrow Shock she's a big gangly jumping monster, I don't think she has full control of her legs sometimes.

Good points, her recall is good, she's toilet trained, she's very affectionate and just wants a lap to sleep on, she's excellent with the DC.

Bad points, jumping up, if I see another dog I have to put her on her lead not for fear of the other dog but because of her jumping at the owner and covering them in mud, chewing, she's always chewing something she shouldn't, barking at the cat.

Just as well she's adorable, still working on training for the jumping, only giving her attention when 4 paws on the ground etc.

reup · 17/12/2013 16:42

That's a very sweet photo moosemama

GhostsInSnow · 17/12/2013 19:28

Ahh moose, he looks a big softie!

Right ladies I need some help now. As you know Saturday is D Day (Dog Day!) I need an excuse to get DD to come with me to Shrewsbury/Welshpool. I was thinking of going with a look around the collectible/antique shops in the town or to the Castle but if you can think of anything better that would be great.

What can I tempt a 16 year old girl with?

basildonbond · 17/12/2013 20:20

Cold hard cash? Only thing which would work with my 16 yr old (but he's a ds ...) Grin

GhostsInSnow · 17/12/2013 20:32

Lol Basildon, she does come out with us a lot if its something interesting. I'll probably just go down the 'shopping' angle. If I can convince her that the shops may have modern collectibles like Potter, LOTR and Star Wars she'll probably be convinced.

Hope she's not disappointed when she realises we aren't actually going to any shops Blush

basildonbond · 17/12/2013 20:52

Hmm let me think ... Puppy or shopping - don't think you need to worry Wink

metimeatlast · 17/12/2013 21:30

Hi all, can i join in please?, nice to see some of the faces i remember from Part 2, its been a manic four months in our house (im the one who's mum had the car crash back in late june, so decided to get a 16 week old puppy to add to the troubles Grin) so, the lastest here is, give up house had to move in with mum to help her, and with me i brought Cat, fish, hamster, 2dc's and Henrydog, who is now 38 weeks old....
his training has gone very well, very quick to learn, but if there's other dogs about then recall goes out of the window! is the biggest Wimpy dog ever and still doesnt like places like towns or busy streets etc. Is quite happy with 2 half hour walks a day, much longer and he goes to bed and crashes out! I can add that our two cats have now got very good at avoiding eachother, and Henry isnt the slightest bit interested in them thank God! he is as good as gold about the house when he isnt randomly walking off with the odd toy or slipper

Anybody else got a dog that sneaks onto the bed whilst they are asleep?? what a pain! as ive been demoted and now have a single bed due to lack of space, yet wake in the middle of the night with a Rottie x stretched from one end to the other! anyway, hope to start enjoying reading how all your bundles of joy are getting on, as most of them were about 8-10 weeks when i last saw Smile

sweetkitty · 17/12/2013 22:19

Juiceortiz - oh how exciting she doesn't have a clue what kind of dog are you getting?

sweetkitty · 17/12/2013 22:20

Metimeatlast - sounds like you have had quite a time of it, I have no doubt if we allowed Nala upstairs she would be under the duvet with me

mintchocchick · 17/12/2013 22:47

So exciting juice! Sure you'll get your DD out on Saturday and no matter how much moaning there is beforehand, she'll be thrilled with the outcome. Good luck with it!

We've had a horrid time with minty being poorly. Came down to a kitchen with 7 massive splats of black poo, some going up the cupboards doors. Poor minty lay on his bed looking forlorn, obviously upset that his bum had exploded on him and some were really close to his bed.

The clean up took 40 mins with me retching a few times. Anyway emergency vet appointment with lovely vet who chatted for ages about his general development and behaviour - like a health visitor 2yr check up that I had with DS1! We finally got into current health issues - he thought large intestine problem so he prescribed anti-biotic sand steroids. We have a floppy sort of dog today it hoping he's not unwell in the night.

mintchocchick · 17/12/2013 22:50

Moose - pip looks gorgeous! What long legs and lurcher boy looks a lovely big lad too. I hadn't really come across lurcher a much before but I will remember them if I ever think of a second dog!

I am so glad we don't have minty upstairs - it's the only properly clean part of the house nowadays!

basildonbond · 17/12/2013 23:20

poor minty - I hope he's feeling better soon

Juice - d-day minus three - how exciting!

metimeatlast - glad to have you back on the thread

moose - v cute pic!

sweet - sounds like Nala's doing very well
