Getting your pup to do his business outside by himself.

I have a little pup and he is good with using the training pads inside the house.
I also take him outside regularly for his toilet breaks and praise him when he goes.
Just want to ask at what stage do you stop using the pads?
I am asking because even though he uses the dog flap to go out, and has access all the time, he still does his business indoors.
I am thinking if there is no paper inside and I call him for a toilet break from the outside, he would soon get the gist.
Of course, there might be accidents at first when he is trying to figure out where the paper has gone.
Does this sound like a good idea?

Take up the paper and take him outside regularly. It is important that you go too to do the required round of applause but if he has got paper I'm sure it won't take long.

Thanks for the link.
He is already doing a lot of these things.
Only ever uses the pads indoors or tries to get my attention to let him out.
I just want some tips how to train the pup to go out by himself and do his business outdoors.

You need to get him used to doing it outside at all first before you can get him used to going alone. Once the happens the other may just follow naturally. It did with mine. I would just take up the pads and do what you did to encourage pad use but outside.

I honestly think toilet training is one thing it is worth investing all your effort in. I know it's tough, we got ours at end of sept last year so I spend hours shivering in garden at 12 am in PJ's through autumn but it was worth it.

We had one who would attract your attention if he wanted to toilet. And if you weren't around he would do it on the pads. He was perfectly happy to to toilet outside as long as I was with him. Took ages to learn to go by himself. He was a real stubborn thing.

Get rid of the pads!

At the moment he's learnt that there are two acceptable places for peeing etc - outside and on a pad in the house.

He hasn't yet learned that the only place for pees and poos is outside. In his head, there is a choice and both are good.

There are two options. I'd take the pads away and put the time in taking him outside; if you want him it get used to using the dog flap, he's going it have to go outside through it at this stage. Ignore indoor accidents and praise for outside.

The alternative is to move the pad to the flap, and watch him like a hawk, taking him outside the instant he moves towards the pad - again through the flap. A pee on the pad means he hasn't a clue that you only want him to go outside.
