How to stop DDog jumping on people

It's me again! Some of you must be sick of seeing my name pop up here but the advice is so good I keep coming back!

18 month old male not neutered yet golden retriever. Had problems with him jumping and mouthing DH and I in the past but we're over that now. But he still jumps all over anyone who comes to the house. Not aggressive at all, more a I'm really happy to see you, let me hug you. But obviously as a BIG dog this is less than ideal.

He's pretty well trained but the minute someone comes to the house he gets soo excited he ignores me. If we're on a walk on a lead and we meet people I have him taught to sit, it's just at home there's a problem.

well lots of dogs do this helga, it can be quite normal (not helpful)
will he not sit at home if you tell him to sit and wait?
or have you taught him settle?

Our most frequent visitors are PIL and BIL. Bailey LOVES them (esp BIL as he's helping me by walking him a few times a week). I can ask them to do the ignoring thing.

How would I teach settle? I like the idea of him taking himself off to bed. He just gets OTT excited though. DD is 12 weeks and we had quite a few visitors in the first few weeks. We used to put him in the kitchen with a pigs ear but he wouldn't eat them he got so excited and worked up. And pigs ears are his favourite thing ever (except for maybe cat food!)

to teach settle you put the dog ona lead, put the lead round the leg of a chair and watch tv/ignore the dog until they lie down (settle), say settle and treat

they learn it quite quickly

I always feel weird recommending training strategies on here as I am not at all an expert. I feel very inferior tbh Blush

I think it's very normal for a young dog to think everything IS ALL ABOUT THEM too, they think all visitors, passing strangers etc are all there for their benefit!

HelgatheHairy · 07/11/2013 12:43

That's worth a try owllady thanks.

He definitely thinks it's all about him. When he was younger (and didn't jump so much) I was always being stopped and told how gorgeous he is. He gets offended if people don't acknowledge him now! Actually that's probably where the jumping problem started.

I am a fellow golden retriever owner who has also moaned and cried on here.

I must say dog is very good at not jumping up. [Preen and double preen: disclaimer - there is not much else to preen about!] We have the command "FOUR PAWS !!!!" said in a very fierce voice. Dog knows that he must greet people in static position. Sometimes I can see him really struggling, but he always manages.

Imsosorryalan · 07/11/2013 12:47

Another trick, which I'm about to try as we have the same problem, is to put them on a long lead and then when the guest comes in to stand on the lead so when the dog goes to jump up, they can't. Also frees your hands to greet visitor etc.
when they sit and calm then they can say hello ect let me know how you get on, we re trying it this week when MIL comes!

Helga - we must have dogs from the same stock! Mine is always being complimented on his looks, so sometimes when out and about he'll just sit right in front of some random passer by in the full expectation that he is going to be petted and told how handsome he is. I suppose that's how George Clooney or Harry Styles must feel!

HelgatheHairy · 07/11/2013 13:39

lainie that's my boy you're describing re the expecting to be adored. He doesn't like the beach because he's too far away from people. He sits and looks at them and doesn't understand why they don't come rub him! I have a pic of him on my profile

I was told to turn around when the dog jumps up, so he has to get down iyswim. Don't say anything, don't push him off, don't put your hands down. I got all visitors to the house to do this, and the jumping stopped pretty quickly.

Lilcamper · 07/11/2013 13:48

Turning your back on some dogs just makes them try harder.
