Poorly hound, vets now or tomorrow?

Our dog is poorly, he threw up on Sunday and again today. Not unusual, but he's very subdued with it with a dry nose and he keeps making 'growly' noises.

DH is going to sleep downstairs with him tonight in case he gets worse or needs to throw up again. Any ideas? He doesn't seem ill enough to warrant a trip to the emergency vets, but I know things can go wrong with dogs quite quickly. I'm pretty sure it's not torsion or bloat as he's been under the weather for a few days but not seemed really ill.

DH is worried sick because he's not a hard-hearted cow like me. He's genuinely concerned that he 'might have swallowed a firework and poisoned himself.' He's not had much pet experience bless him.

I'm sure tomorrow will be fine. Vets usually say to starve for 24hours then rice only. my lab threw up over a few days once then eventually bought up a huge fridge magnet Shock

hope he is ok x

Well there are no missing fridge magnets so that's ruled out at least Grin. I'd usually be far more blasé about it but DH is panicking and making me wonder if I should be too.

He doesn't have any energy to stand up bless him, he's just gone into the garden for a wee and just lay down in a flowerbed. But as its been a gradual decline and he can still muster a wag I'm hoping he's ok and doesn't get worse overnight. I'm actually pleased DH is with him if I'm honest!

Sad poor thing. is he old? as you say, someone is with him but he would be crying if he's in pain, and drinking / weeing is positive as he's hydrated.

most vets open early so can be seen first thing I expect x

He's not old. A rescue so we don't know exactly, but we think around 3.

He doesn't appear to be in pain, I prodded his stomach (gently) and he wasn't bothered. He's drinking too, though we've taken his food away to help clear his system out.

He's not staggering about, he gets to where he's going quite perkily, then just lies down. Thankfully DH's work can be flexible so he's going to take him in first thing if he's not made a miraculous recovery.

how is he this morning?

RetroHippy · 07/11/2013 20:51

Poorlier this morning, threw up in the night then a few times before DH took him to the vets. Verdict was Gastroenteritis.

He's doped up on painkillers and something else for the vomiting now, chilling in front of the fire. We've got some special food to give him that he's just not interested in and we're reminding him to drink. FIL is sitting with him tomorrow, hopefully he will start to improve soon. Thanks for the advice.
