I need help - we've moved.....and the Beagle is NOT happy to be left alone

We've been in the new apartment for four weeks. He has his basket, 2 new additional baskets so he can be comfy in whatever room I'm in, and he has 4 walks a day.

But for some reason, he has decided to scratch and chew and wee against the front door when I go out. Not every time, either. I settle him down on the sofa, give him lots of cuddles, and tell him "stay" and when I leave he seems to be happy. But twice now I've returned home after a short trip out (max 1 hour) to find the door very scratched and chewed, with bits of wood on the floor. And it's also covered in wee.

I can't crate him - he's never liked the crate, and from bitter experience I know he'll howl and wee in there as well. The kitchen/living room is open plan and there's no obvious place to put a child gate up to lock him in somewhere. Everything has wooden doors and frames anyway. What do I do? He was fine in our old house, and although I work from home, I do need to go out from time to time without him! This is a rented apartment, and the landlord is going to go nuts when he sees the door.

Is there anything I can spray the door with to make it less attractive to scratch and chew? He's a Beagle so he'll be sensitive to an offensive odour (I hope). How do I train him when sometimes he's OK, and other times he's not?

I'd start over with training him in being home alone.

Does he go for a walk not long before you leave?
Maybe giving him something nice to do - such as a Kong - could help?
