Hi. I don't know all the ins and outs of her medical problems it our dog used to fit and was having to have medication for it.

We changed his food and he stopped fitting after 2 weeks and hasn't had 1 in over 2 years now.

What are u feeding her? How old is she?

I have a British Bulldog who suffers from head tremors when she has eaten something she isn't used to, I feed my dogs raw. The vet tried to tell me that they were fits but they are not. I can stop the tremors by giving her something really sweet or making her open her mouth really wide. If I had listened to the vet she would have been on medication for nothing, the vet finally accepted they were not fits when I filmed her on my phone.

If you're in one of the areas they work in Blue Cross might be able to help you.

So sorry to hear you are struggling. Not sure of your circumstances, but could The PDSA help?

CEvert · 06/11/2013 10:28

@tillypo.
Quite scary.
Doctors treating human misdiagnose. Just wondering how often that occurs for vets as they are treating all sorts of pets with all sorts of problems.

Scuttlebutter · 06/11/2013 11:06

As you have a St. Bernard, contact the St. Bernard Trust - a rescue working solely with St. Bernards. They may be able to offer temporary support. See here

To be honest, with a giant breed like this, feed and vet's bills are going to be huge - rehoming might be an option for you. Again, please go throught a specialist rescue like the Trust who will go to great lengths to make sure the dog is provided with lifelong backup and goes to a thoroughly vetted home.

All rescues recognise that life changes are often not of our making and that sometimes people have to rehome their dogs. Please, please, please DON'T rehome by offering via Gumtree, freeads etc - you have no way of checking or verifying the home information given by people.

Meant to add, they also have a FB page.

It's a shame if you have to re home her just because of the expense.
Try ringing round a few vets, they can differ quite a lot in price. Some will let you pay big bills by instalments.
Also if she's on daily meds try the online veterinary pharmacy supplies. You can get a prescription from your vet & buy the drugs much cheaper online, there are a few really good, reputable sites. I did this for years with one of mine that needed heart meds. My vet was pretty amazed that I could buy them online cheaper than he could get them from his supplier & wanted the name of the company to buy for his own dog!

Regarding wrong diagnosis it can happen quite often if my experience is anything to go by.
Most recently, last year, one of my youngsters was limping, told by vet she had probably damaged the growth plate in her shoulder, all sorts of expensive tests recommended. I found, myself, that she had an infection at the base of one of her claws. Vet unconvinced till I showed her the pus coming out. Few days antibiotics & she was right as rain.

Also recently my friend's vet left part of an ovary in one of her bitches after an emergency cesarian & spay which subsequently began to decay leading to the bitch being very ill indeed, though this vet said it was nothing serious. She took her to another vet who opened her up, with a second vet as witness, & found the decomposing part ovary. He managed to save her. The first vet is being investigated for malpractice.
