Puppy sleeping in bedroom?!

We got our 8 week old Cocker Spaniel puppy on Friday. We decided he would sleep in his bed in the kitchen, the first 2 nights we slept downstairs with him and he cried pretty much on/off all night. The last 2 nights we left him downstairs on his own and the longest he slept was around 2 hours, he then cries until I go down and settle him back in his bed.

He's doing really well with housetraining and 80% of the time goes on his paper during the night. I'm tempted to put his bed next to our bed and his paper in the hall.

My last dog slept on my bed for years, I was going to try and be a bit stricter with Henry but he hates being downstairs on his own.

Should I try and stick it out with having him sleep in the kitchen or just let him sleep with us? It seems cruel leaving him crying which I know is what I'm supposed to do.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a pup sleeping in a bedroom, in fact it will help with the transition from mum and littermates, strengthen the bond with you and aid in house training. Once he is secure with you you can gradually move him to where you wanting. Leaving a pup to 'cry it out' can cause separation issues.

I have a lot of dogs and am lazy so do not have dogs upstairs (I pretend it cuts down on the housework!)

So I just sleep downstairs until the puppies are happy. 2 days is not long for the puppy so you could continue to sleep downstairs but if you don't mind dogs upstairs then take him into your room.

It is a personal choice really but do not expect to stop him from going in your room if you once let him do so.

My three are now 4,3 and 2 they have all slept upstairs from being puppies and still do. My bulldog even stands at the bottom of the stairs when she wants to go to bed. If you don't have problem with your dogs being in your bedroom then fine.

I've done it both ways - puppy in bedroom and sleeping downstairs. I would say go with whichever you are happy to be his final sleeping place. Do you have DCs able to do shifts with you? mine loved taking it in turns to sleep on the sofa to keep the puppy company.

Ours sleeps between me and DHs heads at night time! We sorely missed the wonderfulness of spooning a dog now that our old lady has died so when this wee one arrived there was never any question that she would sleep anywhere else! They tend not to go to the toilet where they sleep, although they're puppies, so often sometimes they do whatever they want!

My miniature labradoodle has slept with us from the start, between me and DH. She has always slept though the night - presumably because she felt safe there. She has grown though Grin but we have a super kingsized bed so it's not so much of an issue. She occasionally licks my ear in the night DH swears it's not him

Our other dog, a Border Terrier slept in his own bed until he was about 6 months - he then mounted a campaign and moved his bed closer and closer to our bedroom every night. He now sleeps on my feet.

I'm putting his bed next to ours tonight and if he's happy and settled he can stay upstairs. He absolutely hates being on his own though so I'm going to have to work on that as I'll be in work next week for two days and he will have to stay on his own for a couple of hours.

our lab pup slept in a crate at the side of the bed until around 3 months, then she decided she didn't like the crate on a night anymore!

She now sleeps on a folded up duvet on the floor at the side of the bed, if she needs a wee she licks my face/nibbles my toes Blush We've tried buying doggy beds but she either lays down at the side of them and refuses to go 'in' or chews them.

Now the heating comes on during the night she alternates between her duvet, the bathroom floor and the hall. DCs doors are kept shut on a night so I'm happy if she wanders.

He mainly slept cuddled up next to me last night and was much better. Dp doesn't want him on the bed so tonight I'm going to make sure he stays in his bed next to ours. He does use his bed through the day so should be ok. He got up a few times and used the paper.

Now I just need to work on the leaving him alone in the day.
