There still going off by us. And last night they went on till 11. Probably being mean saying they should be banned. But I do think they shouldn't go on this late.

Yes YABU.

Kaffiene · 02/11/2013 22:07

Our JRT is 8 and usually gets really badly stressed and starts hyper ventilating. This year we went to the vet and she prescribed medication for 2 weeks to stop him getting so worked up. So far so good, he picks his ears up a couple of times this evening and gone back to his chew. Maybe a option for next year?

Spider7 · 02/11/2013 22:34

An outright ban? No, but I do think it ought to be organised displays only. And think 9pm is plenty late enough to finish by. My mums dog is on zylkene.... it's a natural product, no harmful side effects. She says it seems to be doing the trick.

Tanfastic · 02/11/2013 22:36

Our dog doesn't seem to mind, he's ran to the patio door a few times woofing but he's not scared. However our neighbour as gone out tonight and left her little dog alone and all I've heard since 6pm is constant yapping Sad

Monty27 · 02/11/2013 22:37

YABU I love fireworks.

ForTheLoveOfSocks · 02/11/2013 22:42

I don't think YABU.

There is really no need to have fireworks in your own back garden. Professional displays are much better than the shite that can be bought by the public.

They are a nuisance and can cause fear in animals and humans.

And I have a gun dog that's afraid of them.

Blongle · 02/11/2013 22:44

Lots of people are frightened of dogs. There are so many of them. And people walk them all the time.

Should dogs be banned as well?

suebfg · 02/11/2013 22:46

I'd much rather listen to fireworks than dogs barking and yapping

ForTheLoveOfSocks · 03/11/2013 09:38

This is dog house. If you don't like dogs then why are you here??

OneStepCloser · 03/11/2013 09:45

I agree, our older dog is not bothered but I suspect she's slightly deaf now, but the little one gets so distressed it's painful and as soon as you calm her another bang and off she goes again. One of our neighbours started their fireworks at 11pm last night which woke her (and DS) and distressed her again.

pumpkinsweetie · 03/11/2013 09:47

Yanbu, although i don't believe they should be banned completely.
Organized displays only, to make it safe for everyone and it will limit the noise to certain times, which can only be a good thing, as people in my area last night pissed me off beyonf belief with their late night fireworks keeping my kids awake well past 11:30 & tbh the racket was tremendously headache inducing!

LifeHuh · 03/11/2013 09:53

YABU. And professional displays aren't better - they are different,it's like saying restaurant meals are better than home made! Different experience.

Though on reflection I'd be ok with loud fireworks being banned - I love fireworks but when I was little the fun of it was the visual side, and I don't think a fireworks display needs to be like an artilliary barrage.
My Dcs hated the noise when they were lttle, and they were the target audience for the displays we went to.
So - all fireworks to be silenced? I'm sure there are people out there who love the noise though...

ender · 03/11/2013 15:54

I just wish they only had them on one night a year.
My poor rescue GSD x was running in circles barking for 3 hours last night despite Adaptil spray and diffuser and wearing his thunder vest. He's still barky and hyper today. The fireworks were far away so not even loud. Other dog, a lab, got really pissed off as he was trying to sleep so kept barking to tell the GSD off and a lab's bark is really loud.
My ears are still ringing this morning.
No doubt there'll be more fireworks on 5th and I've just seen a notice saying one of the displays due last night was cancelled and will be happening on Fri 8th Angry

suebfg · 03/11/2013 15:56

Actually I do like dogs but dogs aren't the priority in my life and I'm rather fond of fireworks :)

My little whippet hasn't been bothered at all about fireworks until this year. Poor bugger been terrified all weekend and again tonight.

Wasn't expecting her to be so left it too late to get her something from the vet. Rang today but no non emergency appt available. Got to ring back tomorrow and see if they can fit her in.

Added to that we have horses and sister will be having arguments with the fucking idiots who spend hundreds of pounds every year to do a semi public fireworks display from their back garden of their council house aiming the fireworks away from their house and directly into the stable yard. Sensible or what?

Police will be called at some point again to come and ask them to finish at 10pm. Ponies will have to spend the night out in case a stray one lands in their stable. Last year we picked up 27 rocket bodies from the yard and top field.

The problem isn't the fact that people can have private displays. It's the size of the fireworks available that is the problem.

In a country that restricts the sale of brinesalt I am astonished at the amount of gunpowder bombs you can buy from pop up shops, the Internet or supermarket.

PipkinsPal · 04/11/2013 21:08

Why can't there be a law that fireworks are only allowed to be set off on 5 November or only at displays. You don't wear your Hallowe'en costume for a week before or a week after the 31st.

mistlethrush · 05/11/2013 11:43

Mistlehound is bothered by fireworks - we had only just got her last year (bad timing!) so couldn't tell what was simply unsettled and what was fear of the bangs - but worked out that she definitely is scared of the fireworks. However, we have just got her a thundershirt and have her DAP plug in near where she spends lots of time - and its a revelation - yesterday she shot in from the garden as the bangs obviously started earlier than we thought they would - and we put the thundershirt on and she immediately started to relax. A bit later her ears pricked when she heard some bangs - but later still she was simply out for the count. I am really surprised it has such a beneficial impact and only really got it as they have a money back guarantee (but its not going back!).

TicTacZebra · 05/11/2013 11:45

I hate the thought of all the wild animals outside. They must be terrified. I don't care if I'm miserable, I think they should be banned. They're dangerous too.

MindyWiller · 05/11/2013 12:11

I love fireworks, but i agree that it should be limited to organised displays or at least stricter rules on who can buy and use them and when- maybe needing a license or something.

apart from the noise and nuisance caused by certain irresponsible people setting them off at all hours it is seriously dangerous.

i know a few neighbours who will happily set them off whilst pissed and stoned and it worries me -especially when there are children and animals around.

silverangel · 05/11/2013 13:17

I think they need to be restricted and the 'cake' ones which are one or two hundred shot barrages need to be banned or limited to displays.

We have had calmex and DAP this year and it hasn't helped at all - but then a truckload of valim probably wouldn't be enough for slightly loppy silverdog. He's not scared - he wants to go and chase them and BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK.
