Dog been speyed - no painkillers or cone of shame though... Is this normal?

Picked her up about 6ish and the vet said she'd had a painkilling injection which should last her, and if she whines or seems uncomfortable, then a bit of infant paracetamol should suffice. He said she shouldn't need a cone as they generally leave the stitches alone. I'm sure the last time I had a bitch speyed (about a million years ago!), she came home with a few days worth of metacam and a cone. Is this normal now?

Dog is curled up in the huge crate I've borrowed off a friend, on her new, sheepskin covered mattress, which was a total guilt purchase lol and seems sleepy but happy enough.

Yes when mine was spayed they didn't give me any pain killers, they only gave me a cone because I asked for one otherwise they wouldn't have.

JulietBravoJuliet · 31/10/2013 20:00

Ah that's ok then :) she doesn't seem to be in any pain at the minute, she's grumbling a bit when she moves but she's as dopey as anything so I think she's just a bit confused lol

I can't decide what to do about her having a wee? We normally walk her last thing as I haven't got a garden, but I don't think she's up to going out, and there's trick or treaters everywhere still at the minute. Feel a bit bad leaving her though, but then again she's not had a drink since about 8pm last night so I can't imagine she's desperate to wee!

We give ours a morphine based Pre-med and metacam inj on the day, and they are all offered 3 days of oral metacam, or if they decline told to phone if the bitch is uncomfortable the next day and pick some up. They all get a cone of shame. What are you supposed to do if she decides to have a lick when the vet is shut? If they have plenty pain relief on board they are less likely to interfere with the wound, but there is always one that will.
If I'd had a hysterectomy I'd want more than paracetamol! If she is uncomfy tomorrow am get on the phone and ask for oral metacam , the injectable wears off after 24 hrs.

Bowlersarm · 31/10/2013 20:16

My vet didn't offer a cone. And she was fine. Didn't really lick the wound at all.

RightInTheKisser · 31/10/2013 20:17

I'm pretty sure paracetamol is very bad for dogs but could be getting confused!

Mine came home with no pain relief. I put a baby gro on her and she seemed happy with that! I had her crate in the living room and sat next to her on the floor. For wees I carried her onto the grass and carried her back in.

I also hand fed her cooked chicken!

RightInTheKisser · 31/10/2013 20:19

As a general rule you should assume that any human medicine is likely to be toxic to dogs, as very many of them are. Paracetamol is particularly dangerous as it can lead to death, or permanent kidney and liver damage which may require life long medical treatment.

Bakingtins I'm worried that she'll "come round" a bit overnight and have a good lick/bite and I'll wake to her in a God awful mess in the morning! At the minute, she's fast asleep and grumbling a bit when she moves, but she seems ok. I've crated her as I've got loads of stairs and I'm worried about her stumbling and falling, and I think I'll leave her in there overnight as well (she's not been properly crated since she was a puppy; she's got a tiny little crate that she likes to curl up in to sleep, but with the door open! This crate I've borrowed is about 5ft x 4ft so I think she'll be ok).

RightInTheKisser I think I may print that off and give it to my vet as he recommends paracetamol to everyone! He's very old school in his ways and is probably still giving out advice that was ok years ago!

Paracetamol can be given to dogs and there is a licensed product (pardale V tablets) but the safe dose is quite low, 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, and it can be fatal if overdosed. It is never a good idea to give human painkillers to an animal without specific dosing advice from your vet (and I really hope they didn't say " give her some paracetamol")
If she had metacam or another non-steroidal injection this morning she should be fairly comfortable overnight, and if you are concerned tomorrow you can speak to the vet. If you think she'll lick then a Tshirt works quite well to keep the wound covered.

JulietBravoJuliet · 31/10/2013 21:34

He did say, very vaguely, "some" paracetamol! He's a very nice chap, looks about 100 years old, and is a bit eccentric, but the animals seem to like him!

How much paracetamol should I give an 11kg dog? Just in case I need to. Bearing in mind I have either paracetamol caplets or Calpol!

We put ours in a t-shirt post spay. Just pulled it up into a hair bobble on her back to keep it from being too baggy. She was quite happy wearing it and it just covered her tummy enough to stop her licking. Maybe try that overnight if you're worried.

JulietBravoJuliet · 31/10/2013 22:45

I've just put her in a tshirt and she doesn't look impressed! I'm tempted to spend the night up here on the sofa so as I'm near by if she needs me.

OP posts:
Bakingtins · 31/10/2013 23:13

I think the calpol is 120mg in 5 ml (do check yours, products may vary) so she could have 4.5 ml. Caplets might be 200 mg or 400 mg and you'd only want her to have 100-110 mg. They'd be pretty impossible to split and you can see how easy it would be to overdose her with Caplets/tablets.
If she had a NSAID today ( probably either metacam or rimadyl injection - look at your invoice) she shouldn't have a similar drug for 24 hrs anyway. Paracetamol strictly speaking is not an NSAID because it is a crap anti-inflammatory, but it acts on the same pathways. Safer not to. If she needs pain relief tomorrow get her a veterinary licensed product from the vet, the oral version of whatever she had today.
Sweet dreams, both!

JulietBravoJuliet · 31/10/2013 23:45

The worrying thing is, I didn't get an invoice Confused but didn't really give much thought to it at the time as I was too busy fussing my dog! I was just about to head to bed and she's just this minute tried to bite at her stitches :( looks like I'm staying with her tonight then!

How is your dog today?

digerd · 01/11/2013 15:47

Hope your little girl is OK and you.
My tiny 5 kilo dog was spayed 3 months ago. She did have a collar on but didn't stir until 2pm the next day when I put some of the special tinned prescription vet food down for her.
She did frighten me by having 20 minutes of hyperventilating at a rapid speed in the evening after her op. She was done at 4pm.

JulietBravoJuliet · 01/11/2013 17:42

She seems ok today :) She's had a bit of a lick at her stitches but she doesn't seem too bothered about it. I took her out earlier and she was very slow but seemed happy enough.
