Xanax for pooches

My lovely crazy 7yo male terrier cross rescue has lived with us for 6 eventful years. We've now got him and a pup age 16 months old who is pretty calm except when a ball and lead are produced.
Dog no1 is dreadful in all remotely stressful situations. He has separation anxiety still after 6 years, barking when we leave and sometimes, although not that often now, peeing by the door we left through, which is only ever if we go out in the evening....he is not to be trusted off lead with intact young males, and is generally a completely "wired" little thing. One such incident had him having an all out epileptic type fit...
Thinking ahead to bonfire night and the effect his stress has on our puppy,
Talked to one of our vets who suggested DAP collar. We've tried all "natural" sedatives known to pet kind, and when I spoke to a second vet at the practice suggested we do a trial of half a 0.25mg Xanax tonight.
Just wondered if anyone else's dog has had experience of these. The vet warned us about mania side effects which is a bit disturbing, given his already off the wall behaviour.

I'm hazarding a guess you are not in the UK. Most posters here are in the UK and Xanax is very rarely used in dogs here hence why I don't think you are getting much response.

I'm wondering whether perhaps they are in the UK as they refer to Bonfire Night.

Sorry, I have no advice whatsoever but best of luck
