Miserable pup castrated yesterday

When the spaniel was neutered, he bounced out of the vet as if nothing had happened. He didn't even bother his wound so didn't need the cone of shame. The puppy is a different kettle of fish :( He was very dopey yesterday when we collected him from the vet and didn't eat much of the chicken and rice I gave him. He did pee and drink a bit, though. Last night he was very unhappy, lots of whimpering and shifting about unable to get comfy. He keeps trying to get at his wound, too, so has to carry on doing his desk lamp impression. I took it off this morning while he had breakfast (which he picked at), and he was straight back to his scrotum, so it had to go back on. He was sent home with three onisor tablets to be taken one a day for the next three days. I gave him one this morning, and he perked up a bit. They don't seem to last long, though, because by tea time he was miserable again. He just stands about, tail down, back hunched, and whimpers :( Is there anything else I can do to make him more comfortable? He's struggling with the back step, so I'm gently lifting him in and out. Poor chap can't play with any of his toys to amuse himself because he can't get at them around the cone. Any suggestions?

Berthadog wore a t-shirt post spay as she wouldn't have coped with the cone. Obviously a t-shirt won't work for boy bits but maybe a pair of shorts when with you in the house? That way you could distract him with toys for a while without the cone getting in the way. If the pain element doesn't get any better then have a chat with your vet.

I think they all react differently. Hopefully you will see him improve day by day. Sometimes the cone doesn't help at all as they feel they can't walk etc with it on. Of course it is far more important he doesn't get to his wound, so I'm not suggesting leave it off, but perhaps speak to your vet about an alternative. You can get inflatable rubber ring type collars now that some dogs tolerate a lot better.

Are you giving him the onsior with food? I think it is supposed to be more effective if given on an empty stomach, so half an hour before food? Or half an hour after feeding.

He's a little more himself today. He cried a bit last night, but settled in the end. Had me up at 5.30 though because he was desperate for a wee. I have left his collar off today all the time I'm with him, and he's a bit happier for that. Eating a little better. Can't manage stairs or jumping up on to the sofa, so thinking it's best not to take him out on a walk yet? I'm distracting him from the wound with chews and socks Grin He seems quite irritated by the patch on his front leg that was shaved, and also the are around his bits. Maybe it itches? Confused
