Tick season?

Is there a tick season? We have a huge problem with ticks here which meant we put Berthadog in a tick collar in June (following a 'seven tick' day.) She went to the groomer yesterday so the collar came off and we thought we'd risk not putting it back on. We've just pulled a tick off her 24 hours later. The first since June. Apart from the collar being like magic, this has led us to think about whether the collar is going to have to be permanent. I'm not so keen as we think she had a reaction to the last lot of Advocate we gave her (scab like things on the back of her neck) which she never had pre-collar.

Need some better ideas. We are also in a lung worm area so need to cover everything which is tricky.

The tick season is from March to the end of June and then from August to the end of September but cam extend longer with the warmer weather. Best advice for ticks is to try and stay away from long grass which is easier said than done. As for the fleaing problem could you not just remove tick collar until the Advocet is dry? You will be able to take off tick collar in the winter I would say anyway. Hope this helps.

We can't avoid the ticks. Loads of deer in the area and every walk is through bracken etc. I thought we'd be ok this time of year but maybe it's the mild weather. Might try removing the collar for a day either side of Advocate to see if that helps. Groomer said to try a tiny spot of advocate to see if there's any reaction so we'll try that first then discuss with vet if her skin reacts again.

I hate ticks.

I think the tick season is a myth now! We saw our first tick in February and they are still around now.

Seresto collar will prevent ticks for up to 8 months and then you would need to use advocate monthly to protect against lungworm.

What type of dog is she? some collie types have an issue with advocate.

If you are using advocate for lungworm you can now switch to a monthly milbemax tablet. So currently my gold star combination is Seresto collar for fleas and ticks and monthly advocate for lungworm, tapeworm and roundworm.
Usually ticks top being around when there are frosts, but last Feb was very mild so they reappeared early the disappeared again with the very cold April to reappear in May.

We're currently doing Advocate monthly for lungworms, Seresto collar for ticks and quarterly worming tablet for tape worm. I did mention Milbemax to the vet in the summer as an alternative but she wasn't keen, can't remember why but I think if we went to just Milbemax and the collar there was something that got missed?

She's a labradoodle and very poodle coated. The ticks love her!

I would ask your vet again. Milbemax only recently got a licence for lungworm usage - early September turning all previous recommendations on their head.

Collar and milbemax doesn't do lice - can't remember the last time I saw a louse on an owned dog. In theory advocate does advocate and demodex, however, field experience is it doesn't work so I wouldn't worry about them too much.

Thanks all. We'll see if she reacts again to the Advocate and then have another chat with the vet.
