Help! Save me from this awful smell

We have a lovely pup, she's 17 weeks we've had her about 8. She's very good during the day at going outside for her toileting, think our older dog helps with that as he likes to be outside.
It's night times we have struggled with, now, I usually crate, and toilet training is done quickly, we didn't with this one. Lesson learnt.

I clean the carpets with a bissell carpet cleaner, all well and good. The last week however there is a damn awful smell of wee that I can not shift. I have used different carpet shampoo, fabreeze etc and still there is this waft of wee :(
I really don't know what to do, we rent as well, so not like we can whip the carpets out.

Please all knowledgeable, wonderful people, please say you know of some magic to de-smell my home!

Try washing the carpet again and then cover the area with baking soda, leave until the area is dry the just hoover up. If this dosen't work it could be that it has soaked right through to the underlay and without taking up the whole carpet you may not get rid of the smell.

We use Simple Solution that you get from the pet shop.

PinkFairyArmadillo · 09/10/2013 18:03

Simple Solutions Urine Destroyer. It's been a god send for us with a young pup and a slightly leaky old dog.

Lilcamper · 09/10/2013 18:21

Diluted bio wash powder/liquid will completely break down the smell.

pinkbear82 · 09/10/2013 20:51

Thank you everyone. Tomorrow I will set about getting a nice smelling home back.

I used Simple Solutions after my pup started marking territory at 12 weeks old. I also had a pissy smelly house and it worked.

CressidaMontgomery · 10/10/2013 00:36

Don't wet the carpet before you sprinkle on the baking powder!! You'll end up with a sticky mess.

Sprinkle it on a dry carpet and leave to absorb the smell for 24 hours then Hoover

Tillypo · 10/10/2013 01:30

When mine were pups I always washed the area before sprinkling with baking soda and never ended up with a sticky mess!

FragileTitanium · 10/10/2013 06:57

I buy teatree oil in bulk and dab on areas any areas of carpet, floor etc. Let dry then use your bissel to clear it up. It works for me!

BinarySolo · 10/10/2013 07:08

I've got a steam cleaner which works wonders. I sometimes add essential oils to the water and the house smells lovely.

Our dogs are shut in the kitchen. The 5 year old has always been a bit dodgy (his first owners kept him outside) and we still get the odd accident. We couldn't track down the smell then realised it was coming from the freezer. Even tho we'd cleaned the floor under the freezer it was the bottom of the freezer itself holding into the smell.

We're in rented too. Tiled kitchen, but a bloody cream carpet everywhere else! And the dogs have to walk through the lounge to get to the kitchen as we have no rear access.

pinkbear82 · 10/10/2013 17:30

Re washed this morning, baking soda now on. Have also been trying to convince DP we needed a steam cleaner for ages.....we have brought one this afternoon! Smile

When came back in didn't get hit by such a strong waft. Simple solutions will be looked at when next in pet shop.

Thank you all so much. Thanks For you all

Oh you won't regret the steam cleaner. I love mine. Absolutely essential with 2 springers, a toddler and a baby.

pinkbear82 · 10/10/2013 18:45

Ha! We have a springer too. He's not the pup tho, he's just over a year. The pup is a springer x huntaway. We also have a baby, 18 weeks old today. And DP has two dad's too. I think it may come into its own! I'm quite excited about using it! Being good and waiting until tomorrow at least!

Watch with the Febreze though. Gave my dog a contact allergy on his muzzle. First thing the vet said was "do you use Febreze or a plug in?" Makes me think it is not uncommon. Soon as I stopped with the air freshener his face cleared up. Well that and the injection and the sudocreme

BinarySolo · 11/10/2013 09:44

Be prepared to be shocked/horrified by the amount of dog hair the steam cleaner brings up. I vacuum first but have to have an old carrier bag to hand when I steam clean to put the dog hair in. Grim.

pinkbear82 · 11/10/2013 12:28

Noted about fabreeze! Hate smelly things on the whole so glad to have an excuse not to use it!

Wanted to use the steamer today but have DSD home with earache so it will have to wait, but am quite excited about giving it a go!
How often do you use it?

OP posts:
BinarySolo · 11/10/2013 13:27

Not used it for a little while as my youngest is just 6 weeks so I've been a bit of a slacker lately! I got a bit obsessive about it tho and was probably whipping it out nice a week! It makes such a difference to our pale cream carpet (stupid landlord). It also kills flea eggs and the like.

BinarySolo · 11/10/2013 13:28

Hehe, guess what I'll be doing this weekend!

pinkbear82 · 11/10/2013 15:58

Aw congrats on the little one. I've spent the day thinking about what I can use it on! Roll on next week.

I have a steam cleaner (vax one) and have only used it for cleaning hard floors (with the floppy cloth thingy on). How do you use it on carpets? I know you can, but I've lost the instructions so would be scared of soaking it!

BinarySolo · 11/10/2013 19:50

Mine has a brush head attachment that I use. I have to attach a cloth to that to do hard floors. Ime the carpet stays drier than it would using a carpet shampoo cleaner. It brings out stains better too and all with no detergent. Awesome.
