Hi, we have an 11 month old border terrier who is very social and well behaved when out on walks enjoys playing with other dogs both out and about and in our house or someone else's house. She is a handful in the house, always wants to be part of everything (even nappy changes Hmm ) and can get giddy and too boisterous but not too much of a problem
Going to the vets however is a totally different story... we went for her pre spaying check up yesterday and she was a nightmare, started squealing and barking as we approached the car park and was almost unmanageable once we were inside the vets. I am sure they wanted to tell us to go elsewhere with out delinquent dogSmile . All the other dogs were sitting quietly with their owners, having a quick hello with the other dogs but being well behaved and our little madam was running riot, all our usual training methods had no effect and I am dreading taking her back next week Blush
Any advice (other than making dp take her and deal with the embarrassment.)

It's not unusual for dogs to become nervous at the vets. I've seen this plenty of times in the waiting room and the vets do understand. I have a one year old who alternates between the behaviour you describe and complete terror, shaking and trying to hide. As soon as we get in the car to go home he's his usual self again.

I would suggest talking to the receptionists about doing regular visit when it is quiet. You pop in dog gets a treat and leaves. We do this all the time.

My mums JRT x border girl is like this ,it's very embarrassing . I've taken to walking her around outside now after I've told them I'm there and then they come to the car park to call me .

it was very embarrassing. the receptionist did try to bribe her with a treat but she wouldn't touch it. hopefully it will be very quiet when she goes for the spaying as we have to drop her off at 8 but I'm still going to try and talk dp into taking her, especially because he doesn't believe how bad she was.
Smile Sometimes being a dog owner is just like having another child, she reminds me of my very spirited 2yr old when he is in full tantrum mode.

Depending on how big the vets is, there could be a few people there at 8am because that's when all the animals going in for surgery will arrive. I would definitely send your partner if he doesn't know how bad it is!

At our vets they stagger the drop offs for ops so you may be ok .

I've seen our vet do a consultation in the car park, sat on the edge of the owners' 4x4's boot.

thought that was lovely
