Anyone recommend some hard wearing toys?

My dog is coming up to 7 months and loves to play with toys. The problem is that she chews them to death within a day. Have tried lots of toys, ropes, balls etc and she wrecks them all, even thick ropes.

So can anyone recommend some good hard wearing toys?

Have you tried a kong, you can also buy a meat flavoured mousse to put in the middle then you put it in the freezer. It gives your dog something to eat rather than just chewing on the toy itself and it will not hurt your puppy even though its frozen.

My dog has ruined most of her toys but her kong is indestructible and by far her favourite. She likes it stuffed or empty.

Was looking at kongs actually. Was unsure of their durability as haven't had a puppy for years.

Will buy one and see how we get on, thanks

You can get black kongs that are extra strong.

My destructive dog has a kong and yes he hasn't destroyed it but he doesn't see it as a toy IYSWIM ,its a food source / something to be thrown but not a toy . I just buy cheap toys for him now ,knowing that they will be a treat for at most a couple of hours and then binned as its less depressing than spending £15-20 on something that will equally only last a few hours .

The Tuffy soft toy range is quite good. We've got two now and they've lasted surprisingly well so far. Normally anything cuddly with a squeak in is dismembered and de-stuffed within minutes but the Tuffy ones are actually still in one piece and we've had them for a week or so now.

The dogs actually seem to want to play with them intact rather than the fun being all about destroying them.

The Air Kong range are quite good as well, though sometimes they will pull the yellow fluff off them Hmm

Thanks PinkFairy. Will have a look at those.

She does like playing with toys as opposed to destroying her, she just doesn't realise her own strength. She is a doberman x lurcher Grin

Same as above, but bones. Nice, meaty bones - free from the butcher.

Grin Grin you do make me laugh, Honey

I have a dog who used to be terrible for this but at a year old he is starting to improve. The only things he hasn't been able to destroy are his Kong (he has the ordinary red one but there is a black one for extreme chewers) and some cheap but very hard plastic bones we found in a shop like B&Ms/Wilkos. He also enjoys soft toys with a squeak and seems to treat them more carefully than anything made from rubber or rope. They do end up missing an ear or something eventually though.

HoneyDragon · 04/10/2013 23:45

We have the black kong, and despite looking like a hardcore sex toy it is tough.

Her absolute favourite most precious toy, and oddly indestructible are dh's old socks from when he was in the Navy. Really thick wool ones. She loves them.

ancientbuchanan · 04/10/2013 23:46

Honey, you've forgotten the

O FFS NOT under my pillow.

topbannana · 06/10/2013 00:57

BlackDog had a couple of toys cut out of old tyres that she never managed to destroy (and she was the Grand Master)
Failing that the legs of old jeans with a knot tied in are good, as are the old bar towels (if you can source them) you used to see on pub bars. Difficult to knot but would last a good few weeks at least :)
I sort of miss that now she's gone- I actually had to wash the boys soft toys last week as they were so manky. Hers never lasted long enough to make the wash :)

tabulahrasa · 06/10/2013 10:00

Kongs don't get destroyed...everything else does, tennis balls are naked in seconds, like literally in the middle of a game of fetch. Stuffed toys last about 20 minutes, rope ones a few days, rubber ones that aren't kongs maybe a week or so.

Oh he's got a leather football that's lasted fairly well, but I think that's because it lives outside.

NewNameforNewTerm · 06/10/2013 10:42

Kongs, nylabones and these are the only ones my dog hasn't destroyed.
