Are there any rules/laws/controls regarding selling dogs and in particular cross breeds as above - in the UK?

Are you looking to sell or to buy?

ClaimedByMe · 03/10/2013 11:04

I think its pitbulls that are illegal, I think my staff is a an American bulldog/staff, we will never know or sure.

Someone a few doors away from me has put a sign in their window advertising one for £100.

The people who live behind me (Who can see into their garden while I can't) have said to me previously that they think they are breeding puppies.

I just wondered if there were channels that people need to go through (Checks/health stuff) when selling dogs.

they haven't specified puppies just 'dog' but it concerns me as I am not sure the dog that I have seen is cared for properly to start with.

Sadly there is no laws/controls/rules regarding breeding dogs unless they are on the banned breed list, that is why pounds and rescues are overrun with unwanted dogs, if you think they are not being properly cared for you can contact rspca/sspca.

OK - thank you.

It may be that htey are just trying to get rid of their dog because he is very noisy and they have had complaints. Hopefully they will find him a better home.

There's no law covering either of those two breeds.

And unfortunately there's nothing anyone has to do before breeding and selling a litter of puppies...there are lots they should do, but no laws about it other than normal animal cruelty laws or council rules if they're breeding often enough to need a licence.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/10/2013 11:14

This might be relevant? Sounds like if the cross turned out with the appearance/characteristics of a Pit bull terrier it would be banned. Some more here.

Doesn't sound worth risking the chance that a staffie cross might turn out looking like a pit bull tbh.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/10/2013 11:16

Oh, I'd only seen your first post. Sounds like these people are irresponsible idiotsSad. Unfortunately there's no law against that.

TotallyBursar · 03/10/2013 13:24

Sorry first post a bit snippy.

If they have certain amount of litters/bitches they need to be licensed by the council, this is separate from the KC but doesn't do anything about those with 1 or 2 dogs breeding and breeding. But they may be useful for nuisance issues. RSPCA or equivalent for welfare issues. It's a shit state of affairs though and pretty lacking Sad.

Thanks. I didn't mean to drip feed but I suppose I was trying to find out if there might be some rules to do with the breed which would allow me to report them but really it does seem more likely that they are just getting rid of the dog they have. I have only seen one dog, the neightbours say they have two. It upsets me that they never seem to walk the poor thing, only to the lane at the bottom of the road and back and they shout at it a lot but that may be because of the complaints they have had. I also do have a slight worry about the puppy thing but I only have the neighbour's word on that - no evidence myself.

Thanks for the help.
