Labrador 'teen' myth??

My lab is just coming up to 7 months, we've just passed the intermediate training and started 'advanced obedience' on Monday.

Thing is...... she's stopped listening! I was soooooo embarrassed in the advanced class on Monday, we were practising recall (which she's always been good at) and wham... she pi**ed off. It took two trainers and myself to catch her, meanwhile she was having a whale of a time.

She's also started being a bit naughty at home and doing the things she hasn't done since she was small, i.e. jumping on the beds, the couches, nicking washing and waiting by the back door for a treat before she graces us with her presence. Last night I just shut the door in her face (don't worry she knows how to open it), it was freezing cold and we'd been having a stare down for 5 minutes.

Don't get me wrong she's a lovely dog, great with the kids, walks nice on the lead, friendly with everyone etc. It's just she's now developed selective hearing and if my treats aren't up to scratch she's not working for me.

Is the teenage phase actually a reality or a myth?? What did your pups get up to and how long does it last???? Wine

It's true. Teenage hormones kick in and they forget their training. They do get through it though.

WeAllHaveWings · 02/10/2013 18:24

My lab is 6 months, they tell me he must h ave an invisible halo at the training classes (they don't see him outside!). I'm dreading the next few months when he turns teenager!

ClaraOswald · 02/10/2013 18:37

Most dogs go through a teenage stage.

My old Border Collie certainly did.

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/10/2013 18:45

All dogs have a teenage phase it just varies from dog to dog. When my boy was going through his teenage phase there was a retriever at training who got her gold before she was 9 months old. 3 years later she is going through her teenage phase at agility she has no recall at all at the moment!

HoneyDragon · 02/10/2013 18:46

Did it. She's 17 months now and appears to have just had another blip Hmm

A doggy friend of mine pointed out she looked different though. So I we think it was hormones again. Well she thought it was hormones. I still withhold the opinion that Hully is an arse.

HoneyDragon · 02/10/2013 18:47

Sorry did it at 7-9 month

ClaraOswald · 02/10/2013 18:57

Is she back on the table again, Honey?

HoneyDragon · 02/10/2013 19:30

The stealth tabling still occurs.

We have had an interesting blip with her recall when other dogs are around. One is not amused at her showing off in front of her friends.

ClaraOswald · 02/10/2013 19:43

She's in her mean girl stage then? :(

At least she isn't trying to haul you in front of buses, trying to stand them down in the middle of the high street.

HoneyDragon · 02/10/2013 19:44

She is very good on the lead bless her. She is also bright and intends on finding a much more more original method of doing me in Hmm

HoneyDragon · 02/10/2013 19:46

Lol at mean girl phase.

They should do a Disney Mean Buddies. A movie for the non cute lanky arse phase of Labrador ownership.
