Not sure if dog is unwell or not?

Hi, just wondered what other dog owners would think of this? My dog has spent the last couple of hours acting as though his eyes are uncomfortable? He's walking around with his eyes half shut, and a couple of times he's been sat on the settee attempting to look around the room, but his eyes are shut?
His eyes look a little drowsy, but he is still active enough in himself? He had a coughing fit earlier as though he was choking on something in his throat and I did think of kennel cough, but he hasn't coughed etc since and its been a few hours?
Not sure whether to pop him down the vets or hold off and see how is?

Boil your kettle and let the water cool down add to a bowl with some milk if the mixture is too cool add more boiled water. Get some cotton wool( one for each eye) and clean each eye do this about four times a day. If this dosen't work you can try some optrex that you would buy for yourself. In my experience this will work and will cost alot less than going to the vets. Hope this is of help.

Why would you put milk in a dogs eye?!

Scuttlebutter · 02/10/2013 11:41

Eyes are something that I never wait and see on - there is far too much potential for something to go seriously wrong, and eye problems that are left untreated in early stages can often worsen severely.

I'd take dog to vet asap.

Kennel cough doesn't cause symptoms with the eyes though some other respiratory infections can. Don't take chances with his sight. How long would you leave it if it was painful to open your own eye before seeing the doctor or optician? Could just be conjunctivitis and need drops, but could be an ulcerated cornea or something equally serious.

It was a vet that told me to clean my dogs eye with milk and water when he had conjunctivitus at the weekend when I phoned he told me it is soothing and it worked. I didn't need to take him on the Monday morning. He admitted the amount he would have charged for me to go on an emergency appointment was obscene.

I took him to the vet last night but they couldn't find anything wrong with him. Sods law, he stopped doing it when we went for the appointment. He seems a lot better now with them but I wouldn't say he was 100% still. I am concerned though still as obviously something wasn't right
