My dog hates walks

We've had her a year now and have walked her daily. However, she hates going for walks. She starts shaking when you get the lead out and then runs into her crate. on her back, submissive, if you try to put the lead on. once its on, shes better and then goes out for a walk, but shes never very happy out, and always gets faster on the way back like she cant wait to get in!

She's always been a nervous dog and has got much better with some things. Never had a bad experience out but has been surprised a few times by another dog, coming round the corner etc. I should add we got her as a rescue stray a year ago. She's just over a year old now.

How can we help her enjoy walks? ( oh, she refuses treats as she is so scared!) helpHmm

Why not just stop taking her for walks and play in the garden instead . One of my mums dogs has always hated walks and invariably you ended up having to carry him most of the way , he injured his cruciate ligament earlier in the year and although he's now well recovered we have stopped taking him out and he just mooches around the garden ( which is huge ) .

Our last dog was terrified of walking by roads - he was pretty unhappy anywhere in earshot of traffic. But fine out in the countryside - we had to drive him to take him for a walk.

Is there anything in particular you think she is scared of - that might be alleviated by taking her somewhere different. E.g. if she's particularly worried about other dogs coming round corners, somewhere wide open.

My current dog likes going out but if its just locally and if there's only one of us walking him and the weather is bad he behaves rather like yours - he's not scared, he's just a bit of a wimp. He stops and pointedly looks back as if to say 'are you mad, woman?' .

The going faster on the way back is quite normal I think - there's one circular walk ours likes but he tends to be behind us on the way out and then suddenly at about halfway round he'll go out ahead! DH said his childhood dog did this too. So that isn't necessarily too much to worry about.

One other thought, ours always seems to enjoy walking more when there's more of us with him - do you usually walk yours alone? She might possibly be happier with more than one person. (goodness knows why)

Oh bless her! Can we swap for a week? My dog does a dance of joy every time we open the utility room door (his lead is in there).

Agree with the point Errol made about more than one of you walking her. My mil's last dog wouldn't get out of bed for a walk with one person, 2 people and she was leaping up at her lead. Or what about taking really high value treats on walks and regularly giving her one?

Mine hates walks too. She enjoys a trip to the pub though so that's where we take her to get her kicks

Thanks all, I would just keep her at home however, she's only 14 months old so I feel I need to work on this to help her socialisation skills don't I?
Also, I love walking ( one of the reasons we got her) so would be very unhappy if we didn't walk. Funnily enough, she does prefer walking with all of us, but as I'm the only one at home during the week, I can't see how we can walk all together, maybe just at weekends.
