Puppy chewing and children

We have been puppy-sitting a lot for a most lovely 8 week old terrier who is very friendly and cuddly and generally adorable.

She chews a lot and bites a lot (just playing obviously) and particularly ankles and shoes which stops our young children play on the ground (they'll spend a whole day keeping high up on the sofa or a bed or get hurt!)

She's starting puppy training soon but are there any tips in the meantime i can take on board for discouraging the playful biting? We distract her with toys and this works but i can't do this constantly.
(We have her about once or twice a week)

Also presumably she'll grow out of it!

Thanks!

It does stop but with consistancy.

You are doing the right things with distaction but it is a constant thing with little puppies, it is how they learn. I know it is pretty full on but it is only for a few months. In the meantime try having a safe area like a playpen for the times you can't monitor.

Sounds very similar to our 9 week old puppy. It's usually manageable with toys to hand but we've had a couple of incidents where DSs foot has got caught up in puppies mouth with only a sock on - very painful.

I'm w

Oops!

I'm wondering if saying a sharp NO when pushing puppies mouth away from whatever you dont want them to chew would help.

When can they learn the word NO?

We've had our puppy 5 days and she's teeth on legs, if she starts biting she gets a toy shoved in her mouth and we play with her, if she bites we ignore and walk away.

Our DC have taken to losing the playroom door so she can't get in Hmm

We have a similar issue with our 13 week old. She's nipped a couple of times and we normally replace fingers or toes with a chew toy. Otherwise we yelp at her like a hurt puppy might and then ignore her for a count of 7 or 8 (no talking, no eye contact etc). We're hoping that she learns that nipping results in no play for a short while.

Thank you so much. I'll try these things too as sound very sensible! She's over again now and particularly hyper so our son is stranded in an armchair!
