I love my dog I do, but bloody hell does he produce a lot.
I cleaned his area yesterday and again today and there is 5 piles in both 24 hours. is this normal I've tried splitting his food to twice a day but this doesn't help hes not over weight and gets enough exercise. but why so much poo?

What are you feeding him?
Good quality food produces less poo as there is less waste material and you feed less of it. Poor quality food on the other hand produces mountains of the stuff.
I personally am still mentally recovering from the ill advised purchase of a bag of Dr Johns when I had 5 dogs about 12 years ago

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/09/2013 09:56

As topbanana says poor quality food of the UK's most popular food Baker's is most certainly in this category produces large soft faeces due high amount of fillers in the food. You have to feed more of this food to give the dog's daily requirements of energy.
Good Quality food Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved and Fish4Dogs are just a few of the easy to get better ones have much lower levels of fillers you get smaller firmer poos and you feed less poos.
The bags of these food do seem expensive until you work out how much longer they last 12Kg of Arden Grange lasts my 10Kg dog 3 months.

Giddypants · 14/09/2013 10:44

we feed him webox dry which I thought was quite reasonable Confused his poos are firm and only sloppy if he has been thieving his latest obsession is my 5 month old nappies or pooy vests he can't cope with wet food as that gives him the runs

How old is he?

Giddypants · 14/09/2013 12:40

hes 8 but acts more like a 1 year old

topbannana · 14/09/2013 13:18

Don't Webox also make those big sausage things of dog slop?
I cannot find Webox on the comparison site but would hazard a guess that it maybe comes under the heading of "poor quality"
In essence if you don't mind clearing up sacks of poo and the food otherwise suits him then no worries. If the amount of poo is becoming an issue then perhaps look at changing it :)

BjorksNorks · 14/09/2013 13:25

Has he always been like this? I think some dogs just do poo more than others. My 8yr old lab will only go once or twice a day, my 15 yr old dog who I recently lost would always go 4/5 times and my new puppy goes about 6 times and twice in his crate overnight! And I feed him Millie's Wolfheart which is good quality (according to my Mum who gave me the food as it didn't agree with her dogs tummies)

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/09/2013 13:33

Hmm checked the website and there is no nutritional information which would suggest it is a 'poor' quality food.

digerd · 14/09/2013 15:40

I have had only small dogs - not teeny ones, but fed them once a day and normally pooed once a day. Even at 10 years-old.

I thought he may still be a pup as they are fed 3 x a day up to 6 months and the more ofter they feed the more often they have to do a poo.
Lovely to hear he acts like a one-year-old still Smile

Perhaps too many treats inbetween meals?

ClaimedByMe · 14/09/2013 15:44

Our girls poos reduced greatly thank god after we weaned her off of crap dog food, when we got her her fosterer told us take loads of bags as she poos loads in one walk, she just poos twice sometimes once a day now on barking heads.

PinkFairyArmadillo · 14/09/2013 15:53

Looking at what nutritional information I've been able to find it looks like the Webbox dry is predominantly cereals (i.e. mostly filler) and very little meat. The one I've found only has a minimum of 4% fresh beef Shock It's not likely it would have much more than the minimum in it and as that's fresh beef the actual meat content will be much lower once the moisture content has been removed.

I've always found with ours that the more grain there is in a food the more they poo. They're now on an almost entirely grain free diet (Orijen 6 Fish and Acana Pacifica dry which are both grain free supplemented sometimes with Wainwrights Lamb wet trays which have 5% rice) and they only go either once or twice a day.

If he's got no other issues than the volume of poo and you're ok dealing with that then there's probably no need to rush out and change but it may well be that a better quality food will result in less 'output'.

Giddypants · 14/09/2013 16:23

Oh he's bonkers, often has the crazies when we come back from walking, the mad thing!
We used to feed him once a day, until he stayed with the MIL last week and on the advice of a dog groomer she started feeding him half the amount but twice a day, so we were trying it to see if it worked, it doesn't

My dog shits like a horse. Five enormous ones a day and I'm afraid he does it no matter what he's fed. Physically he's perfect, lean etc...

He weighs about 35k and eats the recommended daily amount for his size and weight. But mannnnn...

ClaimedByMe · 14/09/2013 19:03

He is probably bonkers with the colourings in the webbox food, artificial colourings have similar effects on dogs as they do in humans!

Giddypants · 14/09/2013 19:24

He has always been a bit barking! Even when he was fed pedigree chum, I think he's just loopy because that's the way he was made lol
I'll look into a better mid range dog food, see if that help, I'm afraid I can't go really expensive as we just can't afford it.

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/09/2013 19:52

Whilst the foods suggested are more expensive per bag, a bag lasts much longer as you feed less per day. So your feeding costs per day are very similar.

ClaimedByMe · 14/09/2013 19:59

I agree it costs about 90p a day to feed our 30kg staffie.

topbannana · 15/09/2013 00:33

www.whichdogfood.co.uk
Will give you comparisons. Webox is not on there to compare with but if you select a mid range (or even premium food- you may be surprised) food and your dogs weight it will give you a per day cost. "Expensive" foods often last much longer as you feed so little so the cost per day is very small once you get past the initial outlay of a big bag :)
