Dog eaten chocalate mousse?

Hi, Very concerned as my dog has eaten some? Should I be concerned? I had a small desert sized chocolate mousse in one of those plastic yoghurt sized containers and put the empty container on the floor by my feet for a couple of minutesBlush
He has licked it clean though without me even noticing? Would that be enough to cause injury? He is only a small dog, Jack Russell sized and I'm not sure if I should get in touch with the vets or if I'm over reactingConfused ??

I wouldn't have thought it will do him any harm. He would have to be incredibly sensitive to it for the tiny amount a) in a mousse and b) left in your empty pot to do him any harm. But if he looks unwell at all, ring the vet, certainly.

My dog ate a whole bar of Lindt 70% dark out of my MIL's suitcase once when they came to stay and left the case open on their bed. She is still here and fit as a slightly annoying fiddle!

Chocolate can, in theory be toxic for dogs, but actually it's the cacao bean/ cocoa solids content that is the dangerous bit, and most 'chocolate' consists of sugar and milk fat. Unless they are eating 70% Green and Blacks by the bar they are unlikely to drop dead - they might just have a tummy ache or the runs if they steal a Kit Kat or find an opportunistic chocolate mousse. Obviously it should never be deliberately given to them, but it won't kill them in small quantities.

OK thank you, really cross with myself for doing it. I'm always nagging at the kids to make sure they don't leave chocolate/sweets etc lying around and I go and do it myselfHmm Thanks for the replies:)

It all depends on whether it is light or dark chocolate. A rough rule of thumb is that 40g of dark chocolate can be fatal in a chocolate sensitive 10kg dog. Some dogs are not sensitive so don't suffer the problems, the problem is we can't tell which ones are sensitive and the first sign is often a fatal heart rhythm.

Agree with subliminal it is dark chocolate that causes a problem and quite substantial quantities. My tiny jack russel nicked a chocolate bar the other day I didn't know she had eaten it until a day later I found the wrapper behind the sofa and she was fine don't worry unless the dog starts acting unwell

Please always take advice if your dog eats chocolate yes there are dogs that get lucky and are not sensitive. However, if your dog eats a toxic amount and is sensitive when the arrhythmia occurs there may not be time to get to a vet. Large numbers of us vets us the choctox app so we can do the calculation with you on the phone to let you know if your dog needs to be vomited.
I would hate for people to wait to see if there is a problem and for that problem to be a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

You would be surprised at the number that do get access to 60 and even 85% cocoa solids chocolate.
