I have a rescue dog (1.5 yr podengo cross breed, rescued from Spain). She has always been wary of men and became aggressive to visitors to our house after we had had her for 2 weeks. Fast forward 5 months. Visiting my mum at her house. Brother in law came in the back door. Doggie barking and growling at him. As he walked past her she bit his hand. I'm gutted. I think this would have happened before but we have been careful to separate her. She knows my brother in law and hasn't gone for him before although she is wary of him. She is quite aggressive in the lead to men and barked at a small boy the other day. V worried.

What action did you take when she was barking and growling at him? Why did he walk past a growling dog without someone dealing with the dog?

Shouted for her to come. I happened in a split second and I wasn't expecting him to come into the house. I am annoyed that he approached her when she was clearly upset.

You have two choices:

  1. Contact either APDT or APBC for help. They will teach you ways to increase your dogs confidence and in the short term avoid situations that will trigger your dog to respond like this until he has had behaviourial training. TBH he did give a lot of warnings that he was unhappy. This approach will get you in contact with professional dog trainers who deal with this sort of situation daily.
  1. Read all the threads you are going to get on here about how your dog is a dangerous dog and will kill everyone in the household . This approach will have you listening to untrained and very unknowledge Mn who always take the same approach to this situation.
