Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Isis, it sounds like he is settling really well. Sounds like the bones are really helping him to relax. I think bones would really help Pip when I have to leave him, but can't try them until he has all his adult teeth.

We've just been for probably the wettest dog walk I've ever been on. Went across the fields near our house and it was like someone continually turning a hosepipe on us the whole time.

Pip was such a wuss on the way there. He was picking his way around the mud, lifting his paws up really high, then whining because of the rain. Hmm He immediately forgot about it as soon as Lurcherboy started galloping then and then had a blast doing that thing where they charge about, leaping over the long grass then disappearing again. It was hilarious to watch! Grin

Wussy again on the way home though and I could feel him shivering through his lead. Sad Have towelled him off and he's dried to look something akin to a big pom-pom on stilts! Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 02/11/2013 14:23

That's very funny moosemama! Lola is fine getting wet but won't run through a puddle, peanut loves water of all kinds Grin

moosemama · 02/11/2013 14:34

Lurcherboy won't go in the garden in the rain and will hold a wee in for hours rather than go out there, but going for a walk is a completely different matter. He has a really thick coat though and the rain never makes it through to his skin.

Pip has such fine fur and desperately needs a new coat. I went to put his on this morning and realised it won't sit properly on his back anymore. I knew he'd outgrown it, but he looks ridiculous in it now and there's no way it would keep his bum dry! Grin

PeanutPatty · 02/11/2013 15:04

Our dog, not a pointy, really is a filthy moo. Mud, wet grass, poo, leaves, you name it! Even in the summer she comes home went and muddy! How this is possible I've no idea.

I'm laughing at the Pom Pom on legs moose!

PeanutPatty · 02/11/2013 16:28

I'm sure I've asked this before, where is a good place to get tags for collars?

cinnamongreyhound · 02/11/2013 17:46

I have always been happy with the pets at home ones they engrave in the shop but I know others don't think much to them here.

moosemama · 02/11/2013 18:09

Pip has a tag slider sewn into his collar and then I bought him one of these with his name on the smaller tag and 'I'm Chipped' on the larger one.

Lurcherboy needs a new one, as his is getting hard to read, but I can't decide where to get one from.

I used to buy mine from Identitag way back when it was a small family business, but have heard they're not so good now. I might end up getting one from there anyway soon, just because I don't know of anywhere better.

mistlethrush · 02/11/2013 18:22

My vets have these or little leaflets to fill in to get them - they look very solid and the engraving looks good - the PAH one we got is getting quite feint after just a year.

Well, the thundershirt is on, lightening and thunder have been ignored and she slept through quite a bit of banging from fireworks too (its diwali apparently which adds to the problems) - the dap plug in is just below her nose where she sleeps.....

PeanutPatty · 02/11/2013 18:34

Thanks. Our dog is already panting, growling, crying and pacing. Going to be a long night.

PeanutPatty · 02/11/2013 18:42

What info do you put on your tags? I never put Pooch's name on, I've always thought it better not to as better someone doesn't know your dog's name Iyswim?

mistlethrush · 02/11/2013 18:48

We put our surname, home phone, DH's mobile, and ideally 'chipped and spayed'

Based on current progress, a thundershirt looks good. DH said that she was trying to hide between the sofa and the coffee table when there was a big thunderstorm and would have got under the sofa if she could have done. And yet the big flash of lightening and loud thunder didn't trouble her.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/11/2013 18:57

Mine have their name, first line of address and postcode on one side and their name plus home and mobile number on the other. One of my customers told me I shouldn't put their names but they both love people so are likely to go to someone whether they call their name or not.

We've only had one bang so far, peanut sat up and Lola stuck her head out of the cat flap Confused

mistlethrush · 02/11/2013 19:10

Mistlehound definitely doesn't like bangs - and doesn't like thunder and lightening either... So, thundershirt, at the moment, appears to have been a very good investment. I hope it continues to work as well when the pops and bangs get worse and closer.

PatTheHammer · 02/11/2013 20:19

She's here! Settling in well but slowly, she is shy and quiet but gradually she made it in from the garden, she's happy with the kitchen and has crept a but around the living room :-)

We've had a lovely walk in the wind and rain, she's eaten dinner and got to know the DCs very well, sniffing them all over!

A lady delivered us a loaned crate about 7pm to try in case. DH got it set up in the corner, I put a duvet and treats in there and she was straight in....no messing, she's popped out a bit but gone in a lot and is currently asleep in there. We have done the separation techniques given to us for the first day, she was not bothered about us coming in and out the kitchen door. Bit of crying when we went upstairs to put DCs to bed. We waited 10 mins, she went quiet and then we walked into the kitchen and ignored her, made a cup of tea.

It's so hard as you want to reassure and pet them straightaway....hard to delay it but it will hopefully work!

Under no illusion that she will be an angel tonight thoughWink

What time do people do last wee and wander in yard/garden?

cinnamongreyhound · 02/11/2013 20:35

We put them out just before we go to bed usually between 10 and 11. Good luck with tonight are you keeping her downstairs at night?

PatTheHammer · 02/11/2013 20:43

Hoping to, we live in townhouse and we sleep on top floor. I've put the kids in my bed tonight and DH and I are going to sleep on the middle floor where we can hear her better.
She seems to love this crate so I'm hopeful she won't cry too much but if needed ill come and sleep on the sofa in living room.

mistlethrush · 02/11/2013 21:22

The Crate situation sounds fantastic - I hope that's good news for this evening.

Mistlehound goes out just before we go up to bed - then she goes out first thing in the morning when we get up - not that she needs to go out then particularly (she will sometimes lie in) and really only wants to dash down the garden to chase off anything that might have come into the garden during the night.

moosemama · 02/11/2013 21:46

Sounds like it's all going well so far Pat. Great news that she likes crates so much, that will really help her settle.

Mine go out between 10.30 and 11.00 usually. Lurcherboy would then gladly not relinquish his bed until 10.00 am or even later the following morning if we'd let him, but Pip the pup is up between 6.00 and 6.30 every morning for his first wee of the day.

PatTheHammer · 02/11/2013 22:29

Could not get her to have a bedtime wee! Let her out several times, left the door open a bit so she could come and go and also tried standing out there with her....nothing!

Now she has gone in her crate and I've closed the door, pottered around a bit cleaning up and shes pretty settled. Bit of whingeing when I left the kitchen and came into living room but she seems to have stopped. Kitchen door closed and just left a small light on for her on the cooker hood.

I'm pretty sure she is going to pee in there unless I wake her in the night to take out? Not a good idea I'm guessing!

PatTheHammer · 03/11/2013 06:27

Oh my god she is amazing! Totally clean overnight, let her out just now and she had a massive wee. Gave her a little treat as that's the first one she has done in the garden.

She made a little noise between 10.30 and 11pm but then settled down, I didn't have to go down at all.
Please let that be it! Fingers and paws crossedGrin

DH taking her out for morning stroll in a bit, his first walk on his own with her so quite exciting!

Hope the hounds were all ok with the fireworks last night, my poor old lab when I was a child was terrified of them bless his heart. Those thundershirts look like a great idea.
Also, forgot who was asking about tags earlier but Moose linked to identitags, that's where we got hers from this week and its great, really good quality and posted in 48hrs.

PeanutPatty · 03/11/2013 09:21

Fab news Pat, sounds like the best start to joining your family!

I've spent the mast five mins wiping bile from the kitchen floor. Nice.

I like the nickel slide on tags. Any experience? The hanging tags always disappear but then that is no surprise considering the hedge diving, bush surfing, grass rolling, poo body masks that occur here.

moosemama · 03/11/2013 10:39

That all sounds great Pat. So pleased she's settling in so well with you.

Neither of my two were bothered by the fireworks, despite there being two big displays close to us - one at the end of the road. I'm very relieved as Oldgirl was absolutely terrified of them until she went deaf. Seems it was worth listening to endless loops of the firework simulation CD.

Peanut, it was the slide on tags I used to buy for my dogs, but they were brass, not nickel. They had them on for 5 years until we moved house and all of them still looked as good as new.

Pip has both, a slider sewn into his collar and a pretty dangly one with a charm that says he's chipped.

I do put my dog's names on their collars, as I figure by the time someone's close enough to read it, they could easily grab them anyway and as they're all really friendly anyway, they'd probably go up to anyone that called them even if they didn't know their names.

By law you have to have, your name and address and postcode. Your phone number and/or the dog's name are optional. You can put your surname, house number and postcode if there isn't room for the whole address.

PeanutPatty · 03/11/2013 21:31

Pointy people, can you share with me your experiences of early days with your rescue? Anyone on here have experience with Salukis in particular?

TooOldForGlitter · 03/11/2013 21:40

I'm still very early days with Bob (rescue greyhound). Had him three weeks and a day. I am not an experienced pointy owner (last 3 dogs were border collies) but if I can answer anything specific I will Smile

moosemama · 03/11/2013 22:02

I reckon - and have been told - that Pip has a fair bit of Saluki in him. He's massively more high maintenance than Lurcherboy, generally more highly strung and high energy. Not sure if that's just him or the Saluki in him though, iyswim.

From what I've heard, Saluki's can be a bit aloof compared to other breeds/mixes and tend to be a bit more independent when it come to recall etc.

There's a thread about taking on Salukis on LL somewhere - perhaps try searching there. I'd do it for you but am supposed to be doing something else at the moment and dh is already grumbling at me. Hmm
