Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

I think most of the shivering that was being done yesterday (by mistlehound at least) was due to excitement not feeling cold - I think that the adrenalin kept her warm! It did take her mind off the coursing going and looking at the sheep though.

meerkate · 14/10/2013 14:29

scuttle and peanut thanks for the advice - I will ring Pip/Linda today - I did try them over the weekend but got no answer! In fact, off to do that right now Smile

WALKING QUESTION I usually walk ShyDog after tea but now the dark nights are drawing in I'm thinking of rejigging things so I walk her either just after 2pm or just after 4pm. If I went earlier she can run on the field like she does in a morning. I'm struggling to get out before bedtime now it's dark really. I'm on my own with DS and it's feeling quite hard work dragging him out since the change in season - he didn't mind at all in spring and summer!

Do you think the times of the walks matter?

We do a morning walk too, usually at 8:30am.

PeanutPatty · 14/10/2013 19:37

Depends on the dog I guess. Some love proper regimented routine and others can take it or leave it. We've always gone for the flexible approach and walk at different times of the day. Mainly so we didn't have a 6am wake up call on the weekends! Our dog is happy to go out whenever, as much or as little as you like. I'd say give it a go and see what happens. If you worry that the afternoon walk is a bit early then you could always ping your pointy round the block quickly before bed for a last minute leg stretch, read the dog newspapers and have a comfort break?

Cinnamon - I'm off to have a squizz now! Thanks! Grin

PeanutPatty · 14/10/2013 19:39

Ignore my bit about bedtime as re-read your post. How about a 2pm walk and a round the block after 4pm with your ds? I have a similar situ with children and dog walking. Today we all got drenched through.

PeanutPatty · 14/10/2013 19:43

Got the LL info but no PR pic.

moosemama · 14/10/2013 19:52

I keep my walking routine flexible, as I've had dogs in the past that were a bit obsessed with their routine and became a proper pita if we needed to walk them at a different time for any reason.

Roughly speaking I usually walk mine somewhere between 9.00 and 10.30 am for about an hour - although the earlier I go, the longer we seem to be out. Then again between 2.00 and 3.00. I have to do it while the dcs are at school, as ds2 has hypermobility and can't cope with dog walking after a full school day and I need to be in to meet ds1's school transport at 4.30/5.00, by which time we're losing the light. In the summer I often go out after dh gets home from work in the evening.

Then again, if I'm pushed for time, they might get a longer walk in the morning and a ball flinging session in the afternoon and seem just as content with that.

The walks are a bit close together once the nights draw in, but it has the advantage that both dogs are tired when I have to leave them for the afternoon school run and tend to still be sleeping when I have all the after school chaos, homework and cooking tea to contend with.

I think 8.30 and 2.00 would be fine.

cinnamongreyhound · 14/10/2013 20:27

The photo is on my profile peanutpatty :)

I would have thought that was fine assuming they go in the garden between YourHandInMyHand. Mine go out pretty much 12 hours apart week days, 6.30am and 6pm- I've bought a head torch for forest walks :). Weekends they are probably closer together as we tend to go for a family walk at least one of the walks. Saturday I walk them before parkrun so still earlyish.

Doggy run cancelled tonight :( ended up walking dogs and running round the roads with my non-doggy runner friend.

Scuttlebutter · 14/10/2013 20:44

One thing to think about with walk times is the season. We find that the time of year affects walks. Early morning walks get a little bit later in the winter to take advantage of daylight. In the summer, it's actually much better to catch early mornings as it's cooler and more pleasant for you and the dogs, and early afternoons are the hottest part of the day, so you'll want to avoid those. We do one longer walk rather than two shorter ones, with occasional runs thrown in on top.

Scuttlebutter · 14/10/2013 20:47

We had a nice pointy weekend too. Went to the Perry Barr RGT show in Solihull. The stall did well, we met some truly gorgeous hounds (and all with such lovely owners) and the girls came home with some rosettes. Smile Fab.

moosemama · 14/10/2013 20:53

Scuttle - you could have come and visited me - or rather I could have come and said hello to you! How did I not know about that? Where was it?

YourHandInMyHand · 14/10/2013 21:38

Yep in summer we walked early morning and late evening because of the heat.

Last night we walked in the pitch black and driving rain and I won't be repeating it. ShyDog doesn't seem fixated on times of walks. We used to have a spaniel who I am sure could tell time Grin she would know what time my mum was due home to within a 5 minute window! On a weekend our morning walk is usually a little later but she doesn't seem to mind. Smile

She usually gets a good long morning walk with a field run, and as a typical snoozy GH she usually gets a 20 min lead walk after tea. I think I will try out a 2pm walk for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

Scuttlebutter · 14/10/2013 21:42

Moose, it was very widely publicised on FB. We were invited by PB RGT as we operate a discount scheme for their supporters. Smile

It was held at Solihull Riding Club and it was an amazing day. The show was HUGE - four rings. Started promptly at 10 and didn't finish till about 4 - something like 80 odd classes. Shock In terms of classes, was even bigger than the GGG. There were lots of classes for greys, as you'd expect, and also lots for lurchers, and other dogs. Smile

Of course, a high standard of stalls Wink - we were next to Dog O' Nine Tails, who we often see at events.

cinnamongreyhound · 14/10/2013 21:47

I love Dog O' Nine tails :) I did her post on fb that she was at her last show of the season.

DOH! I'm dense! Lovely coloured harnesses! Lola looks a mini version of LurcherBoy colour wise doesn't she?! Or perhaps that's just me.

TooBusyByHalf · 14/10/2013 23:24

Meerkate - food all depends on the dog I think. Mine eats dried food - bought in bulk from amazon - and leftovers - but not tins. She only gets chicken and rice etc when really poorly. Some can't eat wheat or have allergies, or sensitive tums - just like people really.

Our walks are utterly random - sometimes early, sometimes late, sometimes one long walk, sometimes 2 short ones, sometimes on lead, sometimes not. It's great cos she's totally flexible - but if you leave it too long she does start nicking things to get attention Grin

Scuttlebutter · 15/10/2013 00:30

Oh Moose that's shocking. Sad Apparently it's an annual event (this was our first time) and is held this time every year - I'll mention it next year for you.

mistlethrush · 15/10/2013 06:58

Scuttle - its a shame they can't coordinate with the East of England Lurcher Club and not do it on the same day as their big last show of the year (which is at the same time as an agricultural show so not at all moveable)

Scuttlebutter · 15/10/2013 15:06

I'm not sure, Mistle. I don't think it would necesssarily be a lot of the same people. The Perry Barr one is geared very much towards greys, while EofE is very much a lurcher event, and they are not that close to each other either, geographically.

We do stalls at a lot of sighthound events through the year, and next year we are already looking at the calendar and have declined some invites as there are so many events on for sighthounds. We've already had invites for events next September! There are only a fixed number of weekends between say April and mid October that are suitable for outdoor events and an ever increasing number of activities to fill them.

Once the outdoor events wind down, there is then a flurry of pre- Christmas shows/Fairs/events as well. The only quiet times seem to be January, February and mid March in the run up to Easter.

mistlethrush · 15/10/2013 15:16

I suppose so if its mainly Greys... (although we had greys in some classes and having a go at things when the main lurcher competitions were over. In fact, a rotweiller had a go at coursing and did remarkably well - ok, it took him about twice the time and they had to do the lure very slowly... Grin)

I shared a stall with someone with a new dog the same colour as mistlehound and she brought her bag of collars to see how they looked - she agrees that the rough nature makes collars much harder, and the colouring doesn't help much either! Very drawn to a couple of peacock feather designs in a turquoisy colour that would suit her, but wondering if the pattern is too busy. Dark red silk suited her rather well too - again the pattern needs to be unfussy though.

There were some 'interesting' dog coats on show too....

TooOldForGlitter · 15/10/2013 19:47

Finally put some pics of Bob on my profile if anyone wants a peek! He woke us at five this morning whining and barking but im hoping very much he will settle soon!

moosemama · 15/10/2013 19:48

Can't see your profile TooOld, you need to make it public.

TooOldForGlitter · 15/10/2013 19:52

Just reading posts about events. Where would I look to find something local to me? New to all this and unsure where to start.

moosemama · 15/10/2013 19:58

He's lovely TooOld. Smile Love the picture of him cuddling his spotty friend. Pip has a cuddly goose (Goosey Lucy Blush) that he won't settle without at night.

Probably the best way to find out what's going on in your area is to join a local training club. Events are often advertised in local vets as well.
