Sleeping outside

Our rescue Lab has just had an ear haematoma drained and is on steroids - again!

The vet warned us last time that he'd be extra hungry and thirsty but his thirst was ridiculous. He drank vast amounts of water and his usual cast- iron bladder let him down, he peed by the back door (which is in the carpeted lounge) most nights even sometimes when DH slept on the sofa.

I'm in no way house-proud but the mess and the smell was hard work. DS has AS so is pretty sensitive, he wouldn't come into the lounge because of the smell.

Would it be horrible to get our PFD to sleep outside? My other suggestion is to keep the patio doors open all night so that he has access to the garden, locking the lounge door and putting his water outside.

I need to check the weather forecast for both these plans don't I? He's always slept inside with us but he was 9 when we got him and we've no idea what he did before that as he was picked up as a stray. Sad

Could you not shut him in a utility room or kitchen overnight with a couple of puppy pads at the door of the room ? I'd be concerned about him being stolen from the garden overnight and if you leave the doors open it would invalidate your insurance should you get burgled .

Good point Floralnomad though we can lock the lounge door leading to the rest of the house.
We've no utility room and there's carpet across the breakfast area of the kitchen and he'd be bound to pee on it.
I wonder if I should just put tarpaulin and pads on the bit he always peed on last time he was on steroids?

Worth a try ,its times like this that you realise that the layout of your house is not dog friendly .

SauvignonBlanche · 31/08/2013 18:43

Yes, we got the house 15 years before the dog and it was the last thing on my mind at the time.
It's good that the back door leads out onto an enclosed back garden as I've had to let him out six times in the last hour or so after his bloody steroids.
Looks like DH is on the sofa for the next week. Sad

Dry carpet this morning! Grin
DH let him out at midnight, 2am and 4am. I let him out at 6am and then agin at 8am, DCs not up until after 9am on a Sunday.
DH looks a bit tired Blush but I'm happy. Smile
