Have taken him to vet and he has been given an anti inflammatory jab and antibiotics. Have been told we could give him baby cough mix to soothe the throat. And obv not to take him where he can infect others.

Poor poor pooch is really off his feed, coughing up phlegm, and looking v miserable. He's unknowable as a lively 15m jrt: even a fox in the garden wouldn't attract him now.

Any more advice? Warmth? What about drinking? He doesn't drink much normally anyway, but he seems to be off it.

Get some Benylin, the children's one.
He might eat some softer food. Does he like scrambled egg or cottage cheese? A little strong cheddar grated on will sometimes tempt them. If he's not drinking cold water try him with a warm drink, weak tea or Bovril. Sometimes a little glucose stirred in the water will encourage them to drink. If he's not drinking at all you'll have to spoon some into him. Dribble it into the pouch at the side of his mouth, slowly so he doesn't choke.

Excellent, we have some benylin.

He has recently eaten some soft food, and I will do scrambled eggs tomorrow. We will try weak tea, dint have any Bovril atm.

He normally loves milk, but woukd it increase the phlegm?

Thanks so much for getting back, it is miserable, like bring with a not talking toddler.

How is he?
Did you manage to get him to eat & drink?
Not sure about milk increasing phlegm in dogs but it might well give him the trots. You could also try giving him the ubiquitous boiled rice mixed with chicken, or fish for a change.
I find strong tasting things can often tempt them to start eating, once they've got out of the habit with feeling rotten. Things like tinned pilchards, tinned tuna, a tiny bit of pâté mixed into their food. But only give small amounts incase it upsets their tummy.
Hope he's soon feeling better, poor boy, it's a miserable complaint.
It once went through my lot so badly that the vet sent me home, after me taking the third one, with a plastic bag of pills saying just give them to any others that start coughing! Confused

He is a mixture, like any toddler, of being desperate to go outside for a walk and not just kept on the garden, and exhausted. He has been lying on the bed of anyone who is prepared to have a rest or lie in, and is asleep most of the time. when not asleep he's quite normal for ten mins..

I can't get him to drink water but he is drinking milk and had, at your suggestion a little egg at breakfast time and a tiny bit of ham at lunch time. Again, and thanks for the advice, I had given him.a bit of string cheddar last night which he loved.

He's still coughing hugely after any exertion at all, hence the tiredness. And, again like any toddler, doesn't want to lose sight of us. So I am doing this on my bed...

Our nice German very said that it us so infectious that in her small town in Germany, every Saturday there would be a dog class, and every Tuesday they would all meet at the vet's again. I knew it was going round because the hounds where my DM lives were not able to go to the local agricultural show, they had picked it up off hounds at anothet show.

Biut it's such a pain. Poor pooch..

Mine really liked Tixylix cough syrup so if the benylin doesn't go down well you could try that .

GhostsInSnow · 01/09/2013 20:17

I used to give my scottie a tablespoon honey when he coughed. Trouble was, smart little dog linked the events and I realised after a few weeks he was making a throaty cough like noise to get the bloody honey!!!

MrsFrederickWentworth · 02/09/2013 20:03

Discovered we only had adult Benylin with alcohol so went out and bought tixylix infant.

Dog adored it. Went hyper on sugar high for 5 hours and wanted more! V v funny as interspersed by complete collapses.

On way to recovery but still not eating ordinary food.

But am not going to give cough medicine at night anymore as neighbours will revolt.

I'm pretty sure mine was addicted to Tixylix ( he had KC twice in 3 months very badly) ,he used to sit in the kitchen by the medicine shelf waiting for his next dose like a heroin addict waiting for his methadone !

Lilcamper · 02/09/2013 21:24

Honey is definitely good, it coats the throat and soothes Smile
