To neuter or not?

Currently having spirited discussion with DH about getting our one year old golden lab castrated. The dog 'camp' he goes to once a week sayes he is humping other dogs and they usually have a rule that males should be done at 9 months. I think he should be done but as he is KC registered etc DH thinks we could breed from him. Ha ha I know who would have to organise all that!
I am sure this has been talked about before here but please tell me what the general consensus is to chop them off or not?

My dog is kc reg but he is neither a show champion or a superb working dog therefore much as I adore him, I figure the dog gene pool out there will survive without his input. He was done at 7 months.

thanks for that. Did he have any unwanted changes after being done?

My dog is KC registered, from very good lines, has a pedigree full of champions...he still isn't fit to breed from.

He'd need health testing, hips, elbows and eyes - one of the eye tests is annual, not just a one off.

If he's neither working or showing, you're not going to get good breeders wanting to use him as a stud, but the kind who churn out puppies for profit and sell them to anybody.

It's also not just a case of putting him with a bitch in heat and letting them get on with it - it quite often takes a fair bit of intervention and as the owner of the male dog that would be your job.

Add into that - any behavioural issues you're getting now will only get worse once he knows what he's supposed to be doing.

Why bother? If you're breeding to get a good working dog or a show dog from proven parents, fair enough, but it's an awful lot of hassle to get pet labs when there are already thousands registered every year.

None at all. The only changes we noticed was that the humping and wanting to cock his leg on evertrhing he passed stopped pretty much straight away.

yes, definitely get him neutered. The health benefits alone make it worth while.
