5 month old puppy testing boundaries, being naughty, normal?

Because really, I am at the end of my tether with her.

She as an ideal puppy, toilet trained really easily, has learnt a few commands quickly, takes food gently etc. now she is just being so naught and really testing her boundaries.

She is shredding everything she can her her teeth on, jumping up at the kitchen benches as soon as our backs are turned, not listening to commands when out and tugging hard on her lead when before she would walk lovely. Could this just be a phase?

She has recently lost some puppy teeth so have put the chewing down to teething. She has a lot of toys to choose from for teething.

We have a baby gate up so she can't access the kitchen but sometimes if the kids forget to close it she is straight in there and gabbing things off the bench and asking them under her tree to chew up or eat. Yesterday she got a pack of batteries I had on the bench, luckily she never pierced them, just shredded the cardboard.

She goes for three walks a day, we vary the route so she doesn't get bored.

The only other things an think of is that she has been like this since we have got back from holiday a few weeks ago, we left her with a friend of 5 days. Friend looked after her well, but perhaps the change in routine has upset her?

She is a lurcher doberman x if that helps?

Very normal. She's a teenager in doggy terms. I found 5-8 months really hard. Was on the phone in tears to the breeder at one point. Hang on in there - it will pass.

Thank you, that is reassuring. It's been a long time since I've had a puppy and was wondering if I'd gone wrong somewhere.

Poor baby! She is teething and is in pain. Plenty of cold chew toys and keep your surfaces clear of temptation.

Floralnomad · 27/08/2013 20:28

Does she go off lead on the walks ?

LegoAcupuncture · 27/08/2013 20:32

She does but she has good recall and goes on a lead when other dogs are near. She wasnt pulling until we got back from holiday. Would a harness help?

Normally pupiies begin to lose baby teeth at 3 months and by 6 months the adult teeth are through.

My friend's Yorkie had her 1st season at 6 months -old this year.
Vet suspected it was the hot weather as is normally 9 months when dogs are sexually mature.

puppies

LegoAcupuncture · 27/08/2013 20:44

Good point Digerd. She is not spayed yet, vet has said they want to leave her nail she is a bit older (7 or so months) as she is a bigger dog and not mature enough. I was a bit Hmm but vet assured me it is standard practice.

Puppies go through a second phase of teething where their teeth are setting into their jaw. She sounds too young for that though. Teenage phase is a likely factor.

Lilcamper · 27/08/2013 20:58

What breed ans age is she?

Lilcamper · 27/08/2013 20:59

And

TheCunnyFunt · 27/08/2013 21:04

Lilcamper her age is in the thread title and her breed is in the OP :o

I agree that she's hit the doggy adolescence phase. They tend to be defiant and selective about the boundaries that they had previously accepted, just like human teenagers! Thankfully it will pass, try to keep consistent with the training you've already started, it'll fall into place again even if she seems to be ignoring you at times. Good luck Smile

digerd · 27/08/2013 21:06

Let's hope at least there is only another month of teething. She will need something to chew most of the time until then.

'counter surfing' is a bit of a lurcher/greyhound trait. I just have to try to keep mine out of the kitchen or surfaces clear. No idea how to stop him, and he's well behaved in other ways.

LegoAcupuncture · 27/08/2013 21:13

Grin at counter surfing, that's exactly what she does! We are learning as much as she is, she's a little minx.
