can anyone tell me about beagles?

we're going to look at a one year old female tonight!

Ones I've known howl a lot and are prone to disappearing for hours on end when on the scent of something!

Beautiful dogs though.

pinguwings · 27/08/2013 21:55

We have a trail hound cross - scent hound so very similar to beagle. Got her when she was just over a year old.

Pros:
Beautiful,
Affectionate, loving - wants to cuddle all day
Quick to learn tricks especially if food is involved, very food motivated, Loves the company of other dogs,
Loves exercise and could walk all day
Great with kids and cats,

Cons:
If they pick up a scent they go completely deaf to all recall methods - because of this she can only go off lead for very short periods in controlled situations, long training lead is a must.
Has a will of her own in some situations - hugely embarrassing when we tried agility class!
Will steal food if it's left in reach
Sheds a fair amount, you need a good vacuum

They are not an easy breed, you need patience and hard work. But they are rewarding

MyBoysAreFab · 27/08/2013 22:18

We have a four year old female beagle, whom we got when she was about five months old.

They are very hard work! I second everything pingu says.

They are strong willed and stubborn.

There is a saying "If you see someone walking with a lead but no dog, they are a beagle owner".

They are obsessively greedy and food-orientated. Once dressed, they put on weight easily. ours is on a constant diet.

We took ours to dog training, and whilst I am glad we did, it was the most humiliating and stressful experience!

Ours has been well trained but her recall is still shit. We are lucky in that we can let her walk and run off the lead, but only in places we know, or secure areas. They are well known for running off. If they pick up a scent of something they go mental and are off. We lost ours a few times when she was younger but luckily she is a bit better now.

They will chew anything in sight. I have lost count of the number of chewed shoes - it is not something that they necessarily grow out of like a lot of puppies do. I have lost two pairs of glasses which she has chewed to pieces. It has more been a case of retraining ourselves, rather than training the dog - all shoes in hall cupboard, bedroom doors shut, try and keep food out of her reach (impossible, she will leap on tables if there is food there and will also steal food from out of your hand, and your mouth if she can!)

She is really friendly and great with other dogs and people, really snuggly and we just love her to bits.

However, I would not recommend that anyone gets a beagle if they don't at least have experience with dogs. Quite a lot of people come up to me and say they would love a beagle because they look so adorable. DON'T BE FOOLED!

I would want to ask the owner a lot of questions abut why they were wanting to rehome a 1 year old dog.....

Scent hounds are gorgeous but I second everything said by others on this thread.
They are renowned for going AWOL if they get a scent and nothing will get them back . They will counter surf the kitchen behind your back to get food ............chunter on and on with all kinds of yodels and singing

But they are lovely dogs if you can manage that in bred behaviour and maybe only walk them on long leash [which is sad].

I wryly smile now when thinking back to walking our hound as pup. We met a sage old country man who looked at pup ...shook his head and looked at us . One word . "Brave" and walked on still shaking his head
Wink. .

Someone who comes to our park has a male beagle who does more or less just what he likes.

The owner spend his whole time chasing round in circles calling the dog's name - think of the Fenton youtube video - while the dog gets on with doing his own thing, which usually involves running around the park at speed.

TBH he isn't the most controlling owner I've ever seen, but he has been to classes with the dog and he really tries to get him to cooperate. However, I'm not sure he'll ever be the one in charge and it looks like very hard work. I feel for him, I really do.

Our dog walker has two boys. They are absolutely adorable but both are prone to disappearing, one just went missing for 3 days. She's an incredibly skilled and dedicated professional, but running is in their nature. Our labrador loves them though, they run next to her licking her face!

Ha pigs wonder if that's my DH!

OP may well not have replied because she is now looking for er one year old beagle who has run off into the blue yonder.

Today there were workmen digging up a path near our house and FabbyBeagle was howling at them all day. (Rubbish owner emocion)

bridgetsmum · 12/10/2013 09:30

I was following this thread when it first came up as we were getting ready to adopt a 1year old beagle too and this gave me some doubts.
We already had a 2 year old border collie.
Anyway, we went ahead and adopted him and he is a gorgeous dog.
Everything said about beagles above is true lol
He doesn't bark too much but it is definitely a howling bark when he does.
He will eat anything left out so we have quickly got used to making sure that doesn't happen. Especially after he ate a sandwich wrapped in foil that I had made for my DH Smile

We never let him off lead when out walking, but we have a long stretchy lead and a big garden at home so he gets plenty of running about.

He gets on very well with our collie, they are great pals. Play in the garden and sleep cuddled up together at night.

So far so good Grin

ahh ive not been on here but.........

we didn't listen. we got her!
she's stunning and very very hard work! it's like having a toddler again!
we adore her and her 'quirks'.
she was being rehomed after a marriage break up for those that asked.

I lost my beagle boy last week. He was adorable and strangely mute! Never barked or gave voice in his life! Soooo pros
Good with children
Love people
Ours never bothered about cats in fact wanted to be friends

Cons
Escaping from a place you considered secure
Running away
Bin raiding
Stealing food from anywhere they can get a paw or a tongue whether that be a table, a hand, a mouth, the local butcher or a neighbours cat flap.
Hard to train/ stubborn / strong willed
Mine liked to dig and chew but grew out of this by about 18 months

My boy died last Tuesday. He was just the best.
