So, the pup eats the pony's droppings then spends the night howling ...

... with what must be tummy cramps. She wakes the entire household. Lots of 1-3am toilet trips when she has diarrhoea before we put her in her run for the rest of the night to allow us to sleep. This is the second time in a week - first time we hadn't realised the pony's droppings were the cause and took to the vet for a checkup. This morning, after another disturbed night, there was a lot of diarrhoea in her run.

Needless to say, she's bright as a button and continuing to feast today. How in heavens name can we stop her? Can't keep her out of the field - impossible. When the horses used to eat their droppings we used to sprinkle diluted Jeyes fluid on them. The smell put them off. Worth a shot or will I poison the pup?

Thanks.

Leave it command? Jeyes fluid wouldn't have stopped my old lab from eating horse poo...

MrsMcGregor · 26/08/2013 17:04

We're teaching leave it at the moment but she has periods outside unsupervised so would have free rein then. Our old Lab used to eat horse poo too but not vast amounts at once. DH has just come in and told me she did a huge diarrhoea poo on the lawn, then a while later vomitted and ate it. Sigh. Am about to put sheep in with pony so she'll really go to town then. Aaaargh!

Can't you just keep her out of the field ,it sounds revolting .

dopeysheep · 26/08/2013 17:19

Dogs love to eat horse pooh. I doubt to be fair there is a brand of shit they won't eat.
Maybe a muzzle?

moosemama · 26/08/2013 18:50

Baskerville muzzle until she's old enough to regulate her intake a bit?

MrsMcGregor · 26/08/2013 18:51

Flora, sadly no. It's fenced with railings and she can get under.

Dopey .... jut suggested that to DH an hour ago. Food for thought.

I was speaking to a behaviourist about this last week, and she said just to let them eat it. If you ban it then it will make them more determined to eat it. She also said to give it instead of meals and the dog pretty quickly gets fed up with it.

Arudonto · 27/08/2013 15:51

Id leave her to eat it if she cant be contained at al..eventually she will learn to regulate her intake..unless she is a collie...if she is and you dont own the horses then I would be very careful.Horses are often wormed with ivermectin, its excreted in poo and this can be fatal to collies.

Sorry, missed your responses - thank you. She's still at it but we put ewes in the field with the pony yesterday and they chase her each time she goes in to feast herself. She's still small enough that she's scared of them and they're not in the least bit scared of her. We do own the pony Arudonto but I will certainly bear that in mind when she's due her next worm dose.
