Please tell me my dog is going to be ok after an overdoes of Metacam

I've done the most stupidest thing and feel free to berate me.

Briefly, we are looking after a Jack Russell for a week who's convalescing after having a leg amputated. She arrived last night and DP gave me strict instructions on her meds this morning. After struggling with getting her to take her antibiotics I was distracted when filling the syringe with Metacam and filled it for a dog weighing 60kg instead of 6kg. Dd2 luckily noticed before I'd given it all but it was still enough for a dog weighing 30kg.

I contacted the vet who'd prescribed the meds and she said give her a teaspoon of salt and a glug of water to make her sick otherwise contact local vet (the prescribing vet is 100 miles away). This didn't make her sick so my local vet said if she gets vomiting or diarrhoea later then come in for some medication. I said I'd rather come in anyway so have an appointment for 2.00pm which is the soonest that they can see her.

DP understandably is completely mad at me and I am just so upset with myself and am distraught at the thought of anything happening to her after everything she's gone through already.

She's dozing at the moment which I hope is ok. Or should I keep her active? What symptoms should I be looking out for? The internet gives conflicting advice.

The other stupid thing I did was not shaking the bottle of Metacam first before pulling it into the syringe but now I'm thinking that would be better if the active ingredient was lying at the bottom but worse if it was lying on the top. Aargh.

take her to the vet they can look at her metacam can be bad for the kidneys apparently I hope she is ok and she will maybe be sleepy for a wee while but id get her seen if you can

If you take her to a vet they can give her an injection to make her vomit.
When our dog picked up a sachet of rat poison while out on a walk we had to do this even tho we weren't sure if he had ingested any.
Poor dog couldn't believe what was happening - his face seemed to say I was fine until she injected me nwi can't stop being sick

VET

But we all make mistakes. Hope all will be OK. x

How is she OP?

EasyToEatTiger · 09/08/2013 18:56

One of our dogs ate all the Rimadyl at once. Both had to go to the vets and have their stomachs pumped and be put on a drip as we didn't know who'd eaten them. The vet said whoever it was would probably be ok, but this was a precaution. I hope you are all ok. Mistakes happen to the best of us.

Thanks for the messages of support. I've been out since taking her to the vet and have only just got back. She appears to be fine and the vet wasn't unduly worried but has prescribed Antepsin for a few days which forms a protective coating in the stomach so hopefully will counter any ill-effects. I'll be taking extra care of her now!

Parker, that made me laugh about your dog wondering what was going on Grin

good glad she is ok

ParkerTheThief · 09/08/2013 20:57

I'm glad she's OK. You must have had such a scare.

Honestly, if dogs could speak he would have said "why the hell did you do that, I was having a lovely time, I found a blue bag in the hedge and brought it to you, then you let the vet inject me and now I can't stop being sick"

FannyMcNally · 09/08/2013 21:07

Thanks ladies.

Yes, if only we could explain it to them then there would be no misunderstandings!
