Itchy dog

The dog keeps scratching and making herself sore. Before we go to the vets is there anything we can do? Pretty sure she hasn't got fleas, we groom her every other day too.
She's moulting like its going out of fashion as well at the moment. Thanks for any ideas!

My dog gets the itchies (you know what I mean) every autumn. Been to vets and she thinks dog is probably allergic to something at this time of year. It's not bad enough to medicate and it disappears after about Nov. She never gets sore with it though, just a bit irritated.
You haven't changed food recently either? that can affect skin as well.

We have changed food but she was doing it before? We've changed from Harringtons to Csj. She keeps catching her nipples when she's scratching and it looks like she has dry skin there, so when she scratches it gets red.

We were going to try and give her a bath and see if that helps but what can we use on her that would help?

My pup is an itchy thing sometimes. I add a tiny bit of olive oil to her food (symply) and it makes her skin less flaky, therefore less itchy.

Good luck.

Is she shedding her old coat? Some dogs itch and scratch then and with the hot weather my dog has been shedding for weeks and weeks. And weeks.

Evening primrose oil....

teaforthree · 09/08/2013 14:06

Yeah she is, her coat sort of 'blew' a couple of weeks ago when it was hot and coming out in chunks, now it's settled but she's scratching like mad. What do I do with evening primrose oil? Rub it on her or feed it to her? We've started with the olive oil and going to bath her tonight, see if it gets rid of any dander/allergens/something itch making!

Could be atopy (allergic dermatitis). My dog gets itchy every year at this time. It drives him mad. He chews his paws and scratches like a mad thing. This year the vet has prescribed him piriton, which I am giving him every night, and he is still a bit itchy but nothing like as bad as he was last year. Baths did not help at all. And he definitely did not have fleas, but I think the dermatitis could be triggered by insect bites of some kind.

ps: his itches disappear every year in September.
