Sick dog - what to feed her??

Picked dog up from dog sitter yesterday, she has been there a couple of weeks and we always send her food (dry Iams) but he does not stop her eating his dogs food (wet meaty stuff) too and she always comes back with a bit of a squiffy tummy.

This time though it is epic!!

DH went down to take her for a walk at 4.30 this morning and then spent the next 30 minutes clearing up very runny mess from the utility room floor!!!

It was vile and am doing my upmost to get rid of the smell as it is making me gag (26 weeks pregnant!).

Now what do I do about giving her anything to eat?

She has not been to the toilet again but has been drinking water and has vomited twice, clear fluid with a couple of stalks of grass in each time.

I haven't given her anything to eat. Not sure if issue with eating food she not used to having or if she has eaten something yucky or is staging a dirty protest (I am sure she looks at us with hate when we collect her - it is much more fun at the dog sitters!!).

Do I give her anything today or wait until tomorrow. Should she just have a small amount of her normal food or should we gave her rice and chicken or egg???

I have to return to work tomorrow so don't want to give her something and come home to a huge mess and I think we are focast rain for tomorrow so don't want to leave her out in the garden but do not want her starving poor thing.

I have some Kaolin in the cupboard which I give in these instances (otherwise miss out a meal, effectively starving for 24 hours). If the poo or the vomit is projectile or contains blood then I'd be off to the vet.

Madamecastafiore · 05/08/2013 12:45

Thank you.

Right so no food until tomorrow morning.

No blood apparently and wasn't up walls (I was thinking about painting them though to get rid of smell!!) so we think it wasn't projectile.

Do I give her dry food tomorrow or give her some plain rice/egg/chicken do you think?

I have some immodium but as she hasn't gone again think maybe she empty!! (Thank God!!)

We always give our dogs Chappie tins for a couple of days after they have been unwell. It is fish based and seems to be kind to the tummy.

Madamecastafiore · 05/08/2013 12:49

Goodness - I am not sure that I could cope with tins of wet dog food even when I am not pregnant!

Thank you though.

Hi Madame

Poor dog Sad

I do the following, as recommended by a vet:
Day 1 - starve
Day 2 - plain boiled chicken and rice
Day 3 - mixture of half plain boiled chicken and rice, half kibble
Day 4 - kibble as usual

Madamecastafiore · 05/08/2013 13:02

You are a font of knowledge Fubbsy - thank you.

Will follow your advice to the letter.

We actually recommend getting, back on your own dogs food straight away now. Starving etc has been shown to be counter productive. Fastest way to normal gut is normal food.

Madamecastafiore · 05/08/2013 13:47

Are you a vet??

DH is baulking at feeding her chicken breast that I got for our dinner tonight!! Think he is being a bit mean but he is saying that he can still smell the poo!!

Op, she should go to the vet today really - if shes vomitting aswell she should be seen. And fed only very bland food - chicken & rice is good.

Empress77 · 05/08/2013 13:55

And dont do the starving thing - thats old school now - little amounts of bland food at a time. But she should go to the vets due to the vomitting as well as the poops.

Madamecastafiore · 05/08/2013 14:13

Rung the vet - he said doesn't need to be seen just do not feed anything for 24 hours and then our choice to give chicken etc. or her normal food - said not to give as much as she normally has though.

Thank you for all of your replies.

It's a bloody minefield this dog ownership!!

I am a vet. Starving very old school.

Madamecastafiore · 05/08/2013 16:29

Okey Dokey - will give her some of her normal food and cross my fingers!!

Just concerned now that if I feed her now I will have to leave her out in the garden tonight as I will not be able to clear up after her in the morning if she messes everywhere again.

I'd be a bit nervous abut leaving a dog in a garden these days ... used to do it years ago.

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/08/2013 19:25

I am afraid the bad stuff has to come out, if you starve it will just be 24 hours later.
