What have I missed?!

A week today we are collecting our pup - mainly cairn with a dash of jack. I think im pretty prepared... But...

In circa 2-4 weeks we will be moving (finally managed to buy and awaiting completion and exchange). We had originally thought that we would be in before bringing pup home but things took longer than expected cheers local council anyway..

I have sorted a vet in our new area and booked him an apt, vet is providing all jabs, flea and worm treatments, clipping and dental treatment for £10 per month so no worries there. Ive set up pet insurance to commence 10th the day we get him, and gone for lifetime cover, including public liability.

Have bowls, a few toys, first harness collar and lead (although they will be replaced as he grows obviously, and will get an extending lead for when he can be openly walked), we have looked into puppy classes, have asked breeder what he is eating and will be off to get him a bed and puppy pads this week.

We have a gate for the new house as dog area will be in an alcove, so we can shut him in when needed.

This house is a damp shite hole and slugs frequently enter downstairs so we wont be leaving him downstairs unsupervised / at night for the few weeks we will be here with him. We have an area sorted in our room upstairs.

We have talked with the kids about what we expect an what they should expect.

I am attempting to prep the at and have got him his favourite dinners in for the time after the dog comes home as he is going to fume I imagine

Have we missed anything? Obviously training of both the dog and the kids will be ongoing, and the move will add a bit of pressure to the situation, but have I missed anything glaringly obvious?!

I wouldn't bother with puppy pads TBH. They would effectively give the pup permission to 'go' in the house and could make housetraining last twice as long.

Make sure you mention the slugs to the vets as the plan you have may only cover a basic wormer. You may want to cover for lungworm which is carried by slugs and can be caught from their trail as well as the slug. It may be included but I pay 10.75 a month for advocate alone. It is worth asking.

Ah thanks, I will mention the slugs, they are truly disgusting and hopefully should only be an issue until moving day, but worth a mention.

Does anyone have any tips for helping the cat to like him?!

Not really! My dog goes to my mums whilst I work and her cat tolerates him at best! But the good thing is we managed to make sure she was in charge as he is also a terrier and they aren't always furry friendly!

We did intros asap on lead. We kept him on lead if the cat was downstairs for at least a week or so giving him 'ah no' if he tried to fly at her. He seemed calmer around her and seemed to know he wasn't allowed to fly up to her. Now at 12 months he gives way to her in door ways etc and only jumps on furniture if she gives permission. Wish I had the cats hold over him Grin

Mines a tom but he is quite soft, im hoping he will assert himself! When we are in the new house the cat will be allowed upstairs and the dog wont so he will have some refuge!
