Well not all the time but when he does go its very loose. He went in his crate sometime between 2 and 6 this morning and it was everywhere, even on the carpet outside the crate. Also found another two outside and I think he may have eaten something outside, I'm always taking things out of his mouth. Got check at vets tomorrow do you think I need to ring today too? He seems totally fine in himself and is a lab.

Oh and what's the best odour remover? Got one from pets at home but I don't think its brilliant.

Try missing a meal out to give his gut a rest an then try plain boiled rice with a little chicken for 24 hours and gradually reintroduce his usual food.If there is blood in the poo then I would give the vet a call .

SpiderCharlotte · 31/07/2013 11:56

There's no blood thank goodness. He's worrying the bloomin life out of me.

What sort of pup?when we had ours I was a nervous wreck Blush

outtolunchagain · 31/07/2013 11:59

Oh sorry just noticed he's a lab, how cute.I found our vets were quite happy to give some reassurance on the phone if we were worried .

tabulahrasa · 31/07/2013 12:11

Bad enough that it's watery, blood in it, approaching 24 hours (at that age)or any other signs of illness (lethargy, crying, that sort of stuff) then I'd go straight to the vet.

Just a bit loose but otherwise fine, I'd skip a meal and feed chicken and rice for the rest of the day...though I've been told off on here for saying skip a meal with a puppy as they get low blood sugar, but it's what my vet says to do as well, so... and only go to the vet if it didn't clear up by the next day.

My experience with labs is - get used to stomach upsets after eating something they shouldn't have, lol

SpiderCharlotte · 31/07/2013 12:29

We've got his second jab tomorrow at half 9 anyway so I'll talk to them too. Thanks for advice, is it normal to be this stressed about a puppy? (Seriously) I'm so worried something will happen to him.

tabulahrasa · 31/07/2013 12:30

Yep, it calms down once you stop thinking of them as a little delicate baby, lol

SpiderCharlotte · 31/07/2013 12:34

Ha ha ha but he's so lovely! Big eyes, teeth like needles and the softest chocolate fur ever. :)

I've a Golden who has recurrent colitis all his life (he's 15 months!). I STILL worry about him! Not day to day any more but when he's having a flare up I do get worried although we have a strategy to deal with it now.

As it sounds like his poo is constantly loose it could be a food issue. (It was for my boy). What are you feeding him?

SpiderCharlotte · 31/07/2013 13:02

He's on royal canin but just the same as he had at the breeders so no change there. I feel as if I ask so many questions on here I'm becoming a pain in the are!

OP posts:
tabulahrasa · 31/07/2013 13:10

I was assuming you meant it was a new issue today? If it's always been an issue you might want to look into whether his food is agreeing with him and chat to the vet tomorrow even if it's a bit better.

SpiderCharlotte · 31/07/2013 13:18

Yes it just started today, though they were a little but loose yesterday afternoon.

OP posts:
HelgatheHairy · 31/07/2013 15:33

Oh sorry, I misread, I thought he'd always had loose poo.

I'd still look into it as a food issue tbh. From reading on here Royal Canin isn't a great quality food.

Whoknowswhocares · 31/07/2013 16:18

I've got a Golden pup who on and off showed the same problem at around that age. Never seemed ill in herself, had all the blood tests etc and nothing found. I cut down her food and she miraculously stopped overnight!
With a greedy breed, it's easy to over feed because they never refuse! I never exceeded the guide on the packet, yet it was too much food for her. If you have recently upped his ration, it's something else to consider as a possibility.

lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain · 01/08/2013 05:48

Slightly odd question, but has he started puppy school? We always have problems the next day when little sharktooth suffers the aftereffects of too many treats! Just a thought!

thegriffon · 01/08/2013 06:18

Agree with cutting down on the food. My lab's raw fed now but when on kibble always had to have less than the pack said or he'd get loose poos.

SpiderCharlotte · 01/08/2013 06:47

He has about three small handfuls at every meal is that too much? I have wondered about the little treats we're using to praise him when he does a wee or a poo outside. They're tiny wee things but could it be them?

OP posts:
outtolunchagain · 01/08/2013 08:00

I wouldn't use bought treats for training, very small pieces of plain chicken are good , my dog trainer gave us a recipe for home made liver cake but with a wobbly tummy chicken is probably the safest thing.

tabulahrasa · 01/08/2013 10:36

If nothing is different about his food then it's not likely that it's suddenly upsetting his stomach, possible, but not the most likely thing to be doing it.

Royal Canin isn't the best food, but it's not bad. Lots of dogs do great on it, it is overpriced for the quality of it, you're paying high end prices for a mid range food...but it's not an awful food.

Overfeeding can cause loose stools and with such a young puppy you're probably better keeping some of his actual food back and mixing that with something fairly bland like cooked chicken to use as treats.

But, unless you're suddenly doing something you haven't been previously with his food - it's more likely that he just ate something he found outside that's caused a problem.

WeAllHaveWings · 01/08/2013 20:21

We have a 17 weeks old lab and have the same problem, he's never really had solid poos, but recently its getting worse.

He came to us on Skinners puppy food and when his poo never really firmed up looked at whichdogfood and bought a bag of Eden, but so far its no better.

If you find a solution let me know!!!!

(might try the chicken idea!)

Floralnomad · 01/08/2013 22:49

You really should be weighing the food to get the right amounts . I feed Barking Heads ( sensitive) and my dog is great on it although I feed less than recommended as he likes leftovers as well .
