Talk to me about kennel cough

I'm a new dog owner with a dining room full of camping gear to go to camp bestival tomorrow and the ewok was going to a dog boarder, but 11pm last night she coughed a little bile and did the same this morning, so to be on the safe side I took her to the vets an hour ago and he's diagnosed her with kennel cough. I know she can't go to boarder now but what can I expect with the illness I couldn't take everything in at the vets

When spite dog had kennel cough (he had it pretty badly) he coughed and retched up thick mucus out of his nose and mouth for about a day after starting antibiotics and then he was much better but still a bit subdued for a few days.

I basically kept him in the kitchen (easy wipe clean floors) and made him a cosy bed up with lots of blankets.

You can give human cough medicine for the cough (so my vet said) and I also have him honey to try to soothe his throat. He was a bit off his food so have him soft easy stuff like porridge with tinned tuna in.

You definitely need lots of kitchen towel and antibacterial spray for cleaning up the mucus though!

Do you have anyone you could ask to dogs it for you while you go to the festival? Your dog will only want a couple of gentle walks while he's getting over the cough and likely to sleep a lot so shouldn't be much bother to look after.

Thank you both for replying now I'm a bit clued up that she's not going to be really ill my in laws have offered to have her. I hate putting on to people esp if there was a chance of her being very ill but I think you're right she should be ok with them and the vet is just across the road so right now I think we're going to go, well I'm going through the motions of ironing packing etc but not getting my hopes up just in case.

I'm just amazed she's got it when the closest she's got to another dog is the odd sniff hello, just shows you

My dogs have had it. Youngest didn't need antiobiotics. I gave him Tixylix and a spoonful of honey 3 times a day. It seemed to soothe the cough.

Older one did need antibiotics, but also gave him Tixylix and honey.

They are most contagious when they are coughing up the phlegm. The oldest never coughed up anything though.

Hopefully, your will recover quickly.

My boy had it twice ,very badly .He came to us from Battersea with the Battersea strain and was on AB for 3 weeks and then about a month later he got it again and had another 2/3 weeks of antibiotics . We also used Tixylix ,which he loved I think he was a bit addicted to it . Unfortunately it has left him with long term tracheal scarring so we have to be careful about collars and harnesses .

It's the doggie version of a cold really.

I went to see my puppy today at the breeders and they've all come down with kennel cough. It's an airborne virus apparently, so she's taken them to the vet who has given them antibiotics. They looked fine enough, a couple of the pups were a bit tired but ok otherwise.

I rang our vet ,when I got home and was reassured that it will be fine. I'm more worried about parvovirus though, as I lost a puppy to that years ago. Awful. A friend found out that tamiflu can be used to treat parvovirus - amazingly!
