We are going on the ferry.
Do I need a dog passport?

Are you going with Stenaline? If so they have a section on their site about taking dogs. Sorry I am on my phone so can't link for you.

Or if you are going on Irish ferries some of their ships have kennels on board. Check on their website so you can choose a ship that does.

You do need a rabies injection minimum of 3weeks prior to travel and passport. You did not need this prior to 1st Jan 2012, however, this is now required to visit any EU country.
You will also have to have a tapeworm treatment not more than 5 days and not less than 1 day prior to re-entry ino the UK.

thats not true for the UK, no issues with dogs travelling. just took the ferry today as it happens, with dog in the car in her crate as she finds the ferry kennels distressing.

renaldo · 19/07/2013 22:17

i mean between ireland and the uk

toboldlygo · 19/07/2013 22:21

OP isn't travelling within the UK. However...

It doesn't look like you need a passport. :)

You do not need a dog passport between the UK and Ireland.
The kennels on the ferries are not very nice, with Irish Ferries they are on the floor of the main car deck just attached to the wall so everybody going to and from their car will walk past them. If you have a nervous dog (like I do) this is likely to upset them however you are allowed to leave your dog in the car.

The rules have very recently changed to harmonise the whole of the EU as the Republic of Ireland is a separate member state you should have rabies and a passport this has been checked with DEFRA before advising a client.

Lonecatwithkitten · 20/07/2013 08:53

I just further checked with DEFRA website you do need the rabies and the passport you no longer need the tapeworm as Ireland has submitted evidence that it is free of this parasite.

TakingTheStairs · 20/07/2013 12:58

Ireland is also rabies free and I didn't need a pet passport as recently as Easter. I wonder has it changed since then?

Consils · 20/07/2013 16:46

I am confused now. We don't have a dog passport.
