He's clearly hurt his back leg somehow Sad examination shows nothing but he is limping badly particularly when he first gets up. I want to wait 24 hours before vet (vets bills Sad), but do you think that's right?

Wait- rest, minimum gentle walks on lead. My dog used to do it then be perfectly fine the next day. Old dog or young? If it continues then back to the vet- but I bet be will be ok!!!

Thanks diddled.

Oddly ny other dog, different breed, did the same thing last week and took a couple of days and was fine.

I would say rest and then if no better Vets visit. Most Vets would just give him some painkillers and rest anyway. Could he have torn/injured is cruciate?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 16/07/2013 14:40

Wait, rest him and give it until morning unless he is obviously in pain. We rushed ours off to the vets when he started limping but by the time we got to his appointment he was fine little bugger

I would wait a day or two if your dog is happy enough to move around and if he's not acting too out of character.

When our dog started limping (at 18 months or so), we contacted the vet the same day.

She was limping loads and wouldn't get out of her bed when we got home/wouldn't move from room to room as she does with us. Having had a dog with hip problems, I got worried.

Anyway, we got painkillers for her and she had to have gentle, short walks for a while.
It went away after a couple of days, and it was probably just down to a sprain/twist.

Our vet just checked her legs and back to see if there was pain, so no x-rays or anything, and then gave us the painkillers. If no improvement after a week or so, he wanted us to come back for x-rays.

Thank you. Just persuaded him to come outside for a wee. Getting up is clearly quite uncomfortable but once up he wasn't too bad, sniffing, weeing and pooing ok. I've put him in bed with a pigs ear Grin he seems quite happy with that arrangement

Can you buy dog painkillers over the counter?

My cat has been doing this.

I first noticed her limping on Friday eve and she seemed happy enough but could not put any weight on it.

I think she has landed funny or something.

But just when I was about to book and appt at the vet she seems to have improved Grin

How old is the dog? Could it be arthritis?

idirdog · 16/07/2013 14:56

Be very careful limping on hind legs after rest could be a cruciate ligament which will only get worse if he uses it. I personally would visit the vet quite soon.

SparkyTGD · 16/07/2013 14:58

I overreacted once & rushed our dog to vets in a taxi as he was limping (non-driver at the time). Once at vets limp disappeared.

We walked home Grin

Agree to give it a day or so.

Frettchen · 16/07/2013 15:32

Limps can be symptoms of the most awful things, or can clear up in a matter of hours days. I would (and I have done in the past) give it a day or two if dog is otherwise happy, eating, and doesn't mind you touching the leg.

Maybe call vets now and make an appointment for Thurs or Fri; then you have time to cancel it if it turns out to be nothing. Obv if it seems to be getting worse get dog to vets sooner.

BMW6 · 16/07/2013 19:33

Mine gets a limp in a particular leg sometimes after he's jumped down from the sofa. Sprained ankle I reckon, so wait & rest up for a couple of days.

barebranches · 16/07/2013 19:39

is it a grey hound? they are prone to bone cancer so if it doesnt go away get it checked.

Gilbertus · 17/07/2013 23:13
