I just had to run away from a lady in the dog field, Benny Hill stylee

She has a lovely American Akita, 11 months. He's gorgeous, clumsy and wants to be friends with everyone. Basically, everything Jasper hates in another dog. I saw her across the field with him, and waved. She waved back. I then headed away from her to sit on a grass bank to play fetch with Jasper and train the puppy. She was walking the other way, but then started ambling towards us. Her dog was on the lead, but then she released him. I watched them for a bit, realised she was getting closer, so got up and started walking away. She picked up her pace. I picked up mine. Her dog started slinking towards us, so I put Jas on the lead. She yelled over 'He's ok! He's friendly!'. I called back over my shoulder 'I know! Mine isn't fond of other dogs, though.' We have met before, btw, and Jas reacted to her dog. They were both on lead at the time and no harm done, but she knows my dog isn't dog friendly. She replied 'He'll be fine! Let them play!'. Her dog is now closing in. I started jogging. She started jogging. I yell back again 'Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, but my dog is frightened and can be aggressive. It's better to keep them apart!'. Enough, you think? Oh no. She yells back 'He won't learn if you don't let him play! Let them say hello! You're being mean!' WTAF?! I am now sprinting for the exit, Jasper straining at the lead while looking back over his shoulder, tail tucked between his legs. I look back, and she has now leaded her dog and is running after me. She carried on shouting things until I lost her around the back of Sainsbury's. I was actually laughing, it was so absurd. Does the sun send people loopy, or what?

Unbelievable!!! Some people can't take no for an answer can they!

ditavonteesed · 12/07/2013 10:29

that is quite quite mad, a bouncy friendly akita is just what a tiny little spaniel needs to get over being scared of dogs, happens all the time with my terrier people think they can fix your dog.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/07/2013 10:31

It was the maddest thing I have ever experienced. I still can't quite believe it. Who does that?! It was so strange I'm not even annoyed, just amused Grin

I think you've hit the nail on the head, dita. She clearly loves her dog and thinks he's some kind of healer. That he's so special and adorable, Jasper won't be able to help but want to be his friend or bite his ears off.

Totally nuts! Poor Jasper!

Now I have Benny Hill music in my head Grin

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/07/2013 10:36

Hilarious! I nearly had a heart attack on the field the other day when a chap approached us from behind with two Akitas. Fortunately they were on the lead and I managed to recall Bastardog. They were mahoosive. The youngest was like a small fluffy bear.

My boy almost pushed another dog into the canal the other day Blush

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/07/2013 10:39

No points for almost, Exit Wink

Would have loved to have seen it! Grin

The sun does send people loopy, I know!

Scuttlebutter · 12/07/2013 12:38

Wow! I've also got a Benny Hill music earworm now! I'm laughing but not if that makes sense, as I know how frustrating it can be when you are trying to do the right thing for a reactive woof.

So glad you managed to escape - going round the back of Sainsburys just adds to the comedy value. I have a vision of you and Jas doing a ninja stylee raid on the broccoli. Grin

Floralnomad · 12/07/2013 12:45

Hysterical as this event sounds ,and I hope a bystander was filming it and it turns up on YouTube later speeded up with the Benny Hill music, I suppose the downside is that you are teaching Stanley that you run away when approached by strange dogs . Not quite sure how you deal with that one though unless you can spare several hours a day to walk them separately.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/07/2013 14:20

I do walk them separately most of the time tbh, but due to the heat needed to get them out together. Not only did Stanley learn that we run away, he also learned that he has to be carried because he has very short legs and no stamina. He amused himself during his short flight by chewing my bra strap and making excited yip noises.

There's a bloke near where I walk my dog who has a Border Collie that is not good with other dogs. Yet he still let's it off the lead in an area where there are lots of off lead dogs. I think I would walk my dog in a quiet area if mine was like that. Why put yourself in such a stressful situation every time you walk the dog?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/07/2013 14:31

Is that to me Reluctant? It's a field used by dog walkers, and is often deserted at the time I walk my dog. We were an entire field apart. It wasn't stressful until she started chasing us. Then it got hilariously comic. She was never going to catch me. I'm 5'9" and have a very long stride.

Lol, made me laugh Shock
I once dodged a dog by going round a bush, except the dog followed us. Cue a comedy chase round a bush..

I'd love to get another pup for dog but Alan dog is like yours.. Do your two get on ok?

Owllady · 12/07/2013 14:47

well this has made me laugh :) :o

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/07/2013 14:52

They get on really well, alan :) I chose the pup based on his relaxed personality, and took intro's very slowly. We've had the pup 11 weeks now, and they sleep together in Jas's bed. In fact, if anything, Jas is too lenient with the pup. He can often be found laying on his back while the puppy tugs on his ears. Jas is ok with dogs he is allowed to get to know in his own time, he just panics if rushed at. Also, although gobby and lungey, he has never actually hurt another dog.
