Hi,

We're taking ddog on holiday in a couple of weeks, did the same last year so he has is passport and is obviously up to date with everything.

Does he need any extra tick / other treatments before going. I've looked on line but all the Defra info refers to the first visit?

Thanks

We were recommended to use a Seresto coat as it deals with a particular nasty that we don't have in this country. We did go right down to southern France though and I don't think it was really needed for further up.

Tick cover is not a legal requirement any more, but would consider essential as ticks are much worse in France than here and they carry several nasty diseases.

Thanks both, going to pop to the vet later just to make sure all is ok, couldn't bear for him to not be allowed out or more importantly, back in!

Remember he'll need to have a praziquantel tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before you return to the UK, with details recorded in the passport. A friend had a horrible experience when she didn't know about this, and had to rearrange crossing and find a hotel in Calais for a couple of nights.

I had to sort the treatment in France last year. I don't speak French so had copied and pasted the DEFRA info to show to the vet.

That worked okay, but booking the appt with the vet's receptionist was amusing. In front of a waiting room full of people, I had to use sub-GCSE French and a mime of a tapeworm to try to explain to her what I needed. Eventually one of the waiting men got my charade and could explain - after checking with me, "leetle worms!" Grin

syra you are such an amateur foreigner :o
I cheated by having the campsite courier book my appointment. I then turned up, smiled and said bonjour, waved DDogs passport at them and smiled again. They smiled, took the passport and administered DDogs stuff, smiled and handed back the passport, I took it, smiled and said merci, they smiled and handed me the bill, I smiled and paid it, they smiled and said au revoir, so did I and then we left.
I didn't even have to speak very slowly and loudly :o

It doesn't have to Praziquantel (It was praziquantel in the original legislation in 2000 and was ammended in around 2003). The legislation is a product licenced for the specific use in the country of treatment - milbemycin is one of the many others that are okay.

We're in France at the moment with our dog and really enjoying how welcoming everyone is here compared to the UK.. Shops and restaurants!
