My pup used to be on this & I got it in bulk from pet-supermarket.co.uk whenever it had a money off offer on. Pets at home sometime have it on offer too and it's worth keeping an eye out.

www.justpets.net Have a look not sure how much it is though.

MrsMcGregor · 01/07/2013 22:14

Thank you both - shall check out both those sites.

What is so special about Royal Canin to make it so expensive versus some of the other 'better' brands??

Nothing at all, it's a poor food at a hugely inflated price. Lots of cheaper and better alternatives!

MrsMcGregor · 01/07/2013 22:36

Really?! Which brands would you suggest are better please toboldlygo? We're getting a new pup next week and I will start her on that because it's what she's on just now and I don't want a lonely pup with an upset tummy! However, down the road, I will be looking around so am very interested in recommendations (although dry food, not raw Grin)!

Thanks

You can't go wrong with Canin, Wellbeloved etc they are all excellent foods. I feed our 16 month old Golden Retriever on Just Pets own brand dry food. He's been on it since he was tiny and has a beautiful coat in super condition.

Royal Canin review

Well I would always recommend raw first of all but for dry kibble... Fish4Dogs (the premium formulation only, the standard one now contains a lot of pea flour) or similar fish and potato based kibbles, Pets at Home do an own brand version - their Wainwrights brand is decent also. Applaws is excellent. Arden Grange and James Wellbeloved are decent. All of these are cheaper than RC and aren't full of wheat. Many other 'premium' brands can be similarly crap - Purina, Hills, Iams/Eukanuba.

Things like Orijen and Acana are meat based and grain free, excellent foods but £££. Raw can be done loads cheaper. If price is really an issue then Skinners Duck/Salmon/Turkey and rice working dog foods are pretty good for being under £25/15kg.

Examine the ingredients lists - you want a named meat source(s) as first ingredient, as few grains and additives as possible.

Avoid at all costs Bakers, Pedigree, Beta, Wagg.

Just my opinion. :)

SoYo · 02/07/2013 01:45

I agree with the above. PuppyMonster was on RC from the breeder so we kept her on for first 6m then gradually changed. She's now on Applaws which has a much much higher meat content so we use less, is higher quality in terms of ingredients and is cheaper per bag anyway.

MrsMcGregor · 02/07/2013 08:56

That's really helpful tobold and soyo, especially the advice about the ingredients list - thank you. Price isn't a huge issue but if I can get as good for less, then it would make sense to do so. Am going to grab a 15kg bag of RC today and that will get us through 6 weeks or more, then I'll see how she is and think about a change. Thanks again.

It's something of a minefield, I found.

I changed from RC to Orijen and various other high-quality mainly meat dry foods, and not one of them was good for my dog. She started doing up to 4 poos a day, horrible smelly farts, her breath stank...

I agree that the less chemicals the better, but I am unconvinced that no-grains etc is the only way to go.

MrsMcGregor · 03/07/2013 22:27

Thanks all - got a 15kg bag in PAH for £46 versus £21 for 4kg. It'll keep us going for a while.

Yes, it is a minefield HopeForTheBest. We had awful problems with our old Lab and food from puppyhood. Sigh.

Pet Planet is,a,good online website for, buying Royal Canin.
My dog is,on the Sensitivity Control type, Duck, and Tapioca, and it is the only food, that does not cause bloody mucous and diarrhoea in him. so,I cannot agree that the ingredients are no,good, they work beautifully for,my dog.hth.

My dog has Royal Canin, I've tried him on wainwrights but he doesn't like it as much. I stock up when pets at home have a three for two offer.

passmetheprozac · 06/07/2013 23:28

I agree that dog food is a tricky thing, I have a rottie and a lab. They are currently fed on aldi own brand dog food (dry) the labelled nutritional difference between that and the brand they used to get (it's been so long I can't remember which!) is negligible.

With mine 10 and 7 (years old) i mix wet and dry, more dry than wet, and they have a charcoal afters, no more after dinner (peel the freaking wallpaper off the walls) farting.

This works for my dogs, it may not work for your dogs, you will find what suits your dog, just remember that brand isn't always best. Shop around and look at labels.
