We are looking after someone'a border terrier for the summer(long story!)

What might I not have thought of? Sh's a beautifully behaved adult dog- she's used to cats, and our cats, while we don't have a dog, are used to dogs being around.

I love BT's. They are adorable. Mine hated hedgehogs, but she always came off worst (ouch).

She may have never met a hedgehog- she's a city dog and she'll be coming to the country. I'll try and find her one.....

fox turd and rolling in it Grin

fanoftheinvisibleman · 26/06/2013 12:29

Oh god yes...my bt loves fox poo. If I'm honest, he loves any poo! Not sure how he decides what should be snaffled and what should be rolled in though

If she is not familiar with the countryside just bear un mind they can be fearless little beggars...overconfidence is always getting mine into scrapes and try as I might to stop him his mind is usually three paces ahead of mine Blush Fabulous little dogs though (as long as you like life at the deep endGrin)

Beautifully behaved adult border terrier....oh I want one - looks a teenage narky, barky, wall chewing, carpet digging, counter surfing, other dog obsessed, toy snaffling border terrier and reaches for clicker....

Things your dog's owner should go through with you before handing over the terrierist for a summer holiday. :)

Updates on when dog was last wormed/flea treated and date that next treatment is due. If this falls in your period of care, information and instructions on what products, and how funded.

MOST IMPORTANT - vet details if you are going to the same vet, or if you are too far away, agree on what surgery you will be temporarily registered with. Dog insurance - policy details and info on how to claim in the case of emergency. Agree a protocol for vet treatment - who is going to be responsible for paying, and making the decision about when/whether to take.

Dog ID - is he chipped? If so, update chip details for the summer. Consider having a new ID tag made with your mobile number on, not his old number. Pre-register him on DogsLost website, so that if he decides to leg it, his details can be distributed nationwide within an hour. Also put the vet's number and the local dog warden number into your mobile phone.

Discuss with his owners feeding - times, what he eats, any allergies, what treats he is allowed. Transport - how does he travel in the car? Harness, cage, in boot etc. Toys - favourite squeaky ball, Kong, etc.

Grooming - how often? What with? Will he need a visit to a professional while he is with you?

I'd have a good check round your garden - make sure fences are secure and remind family members about the importance of keeping doors and gates securely closed.

Scuttlebutter beat me to it! I'd opened up my dog-coming-to-stay form and was about to copy and paste the key elements to you. But I think that post ^^ has covered all the important stuff.

Thank you- we hadn't thought of updating chip details and collar tag- .

Must start stockpiling Valiumsmoked salmon for the cats.......
