Can I give my dog a raw lamb leg bone?

She's never had a bone before. I know you can't give them cooked ones, but we've just got all the meat off a leg of lamb and were wondering whether she could have the bone, or would it be too small?

As far as I know lamb is a big no, no for dogs. The only type of bone I think a dog can have is a marrow bone, but as much as your dog will adore it, even this will cause extra poo.

Our dog gets lamb rib and neck and shoulder bones all the time, raw. Buy them online from natural instinct or other online raw food retailers if our butcher doesn't have any bones. As long as they are not cooked, I assume, given they are being retailed, there's. no issue!

He has never suffered with poo issues, but is used to raw food anyway. He adores a good bone to chomp on!

needastrongone · 22/06/2013 17:31

Ps. Raw feeding actually reduces the amount of poo they do, and firms it up too!

Raw lamb bones, are 100% fine. My dogs have a raw diet.
Dog will love it.

Thanks for the replies! Our butcher has never had any suitable dog bones whenever we've asked, so I'll have a look at natural instinct.

MuttDog had a leg of lamb bone last weekend for her Sunday lunch. Took her about 3 hours to destroy it - I've never seen her so full!

(She has an 'almost' raw diet, bones at least twice a week and she is wonderfully healthy. Had her MOT last week and we were told she had the best coat and teeth the vet had seen in a long time Smile)

My dog is raw fed and has had lamb ribs today.

Lilcamper · 22/06/2013 21:16

My dog is raw fed too, lamb ribs were on the menu today. It will be a chicken carcass tomorrow. I have been told that weight bearing bones of cows aren't good because they are hard on the teeth but lamb should be fine.

I fed raw, lamb I find tends to run out lot out a bit but perfectly fine as I do expect this now and no it's nothing to worry about! Bonus is they love it :)

multitask · 22/06/2013 21:24

Sorry wine is talking, it should say that lamb tends to run OUR lot out a bit :)

Depends on the dog. I had to take MIL's bullmastiff to the emergency vet after he ate lamb bones, but didn't chew enough (huge mouth, greedy dog). The bones locked inside his bowel and if they hadn't got them out he would have died as his bowels were completely blocked.

MissMarplesBloomers · 22/06/2013 21:32

Natural Instinct & the like are ok as part of the raw diet, but if you think of how they would eat in the wild it wouldn't be minced up !

Raw bones as part of the diet are fine.

I'm sure if you had a chat with your butcher and explained to him what you wanted, he'd be able to keep stuff aside for you, that you could pick up from him every few days. My brother gets raw chicken carcasses, chicken wings, bones from his butcher - all for free or a very small cost. After all, it's all the bits that the butcher just has to dispose of so he's glad to get rid of them as well.
